Arthritis Treatment For Dogs

By Nicky Takasura

As your dog ages it is not unusual for him to slow down a little; but only a little. The gradual decline of activity, and interest in activity, are signals that your pet may be experiencing joint pain as a result of arthritis. Joint issues are a very common problem affecting over 12 million dogs, especially older and large dogs. Dismissing your dog's symptoms as normal aging could be allowing your dog to suffer needlessly. Pain relief for dogs experiencing joint pain and mobility problems can be effectively managed. Arthritis is a chronic disease that requires life long treatment.

Arthritis affects the joints. The most common joints where pets get arthritis is in the hips, knees and ankles. Cartilage is a protective cushion between the bones in the joints that allows ease of movement. In arthritic conditions, when the cartilage begins to deteriorate, the bones start rubbing together, causing growing discomfort, stiffness, pain and, if left untreated, can result in lameness. There are a number of treatments that will impede the deterioration of the cartilage, allowing more freedom of movement for your pet, and reduce her stiffness.

Your beloved pet can't explain what's wrong with him or if he's in pain. So, how do you know if your pet is experiencing arthritic problems and pain? You need to watch for the non-verbal clues and take behavior changes seriously. Here are a few of the classic symptoms of arthritis for dogs:

* Hesitates to go up or down stairs

* Resists jumping up into a car or on furniture

* Lagging behind or tiring easily during walks

* Moving stiffly and slowly after rising

* Wants to lie down rather than sit or stand

* Limping

There are other, more subtle symptoms that may also be indicators that your pet is experiencing joint immobility or pain issues. Weight gain and extensive sleeping, less enthusiasm for play and disinterest in general are also signs to watch for. Keep notes, and if your pet continues to exhibit these symptoms for longer than 2 weeks, take her to the veterinarian for an arthritis evaluation. Arthritis treatment for dogs will vary depending on the age and condition of your pet, so you need to get a proper diagnosis from the vet first, and then you will want to follow the management plan that is prescribed for your pet.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are commonly prescribed as a pain medication for dogs. Pain medication will only mask the problem, however, so treatment may expand to include special foods and over the counter products that contain glucosamine and chondroitin, which works to support the cartilage in the joints. Omega fatty acids are also known to increase cartilage health. Your dog may have to go on a diet to decrease the extra pounds that are causing unnecessary stress on already sore joints. Adding fiber to you dog's diet should help your pet lose those extra pounds. There are even topical treatments available to relieve joint and muscle soreness.

In addition to managing diet, prescriptions and over the counter aids for your pet, there are some lifestyle changes that will also help to manage your dog's arthritis. Low impact exercises, like leash walking, swimming and going up and down stairs, provide for good range of motion and muscle building while limiting wear and tear on the joints. Daily exercise is best, and warming your dog's muscles prior to exercise and including a cool down period is beneficial. Cold, damp weather and conditions tend to aggravate arthritis, so provide your pet with a warm, dry place to sleep and spend his times. A pet sweater will help keep those joints warmer during colder days.

Your veterinarian may prescribe massage or physical therapy, which have proven to be very beneficial therapies in pain relief for dogs, as part of your dog's treatment. The veterinary staff will show you how to massage and perform physical therapy to relax your dog's stiff muscles and promote a better range of motion in the joints. When beginning this type of therapy, remember to take it slowly; you need to build trust with your pet. You can start by petting him around and on the area where you intend to work. You will gently work up to kneading the muscles around the joint, using your fingertips in a small, circular motion. Gradually work your way out to the surrounding muscles. At all times, massage and physical therapy should be done in a warm, relaxed and safe environment. Make this experience as comfortable as possible for both you and your dog.

Overall, you want to work closely with your veterinarian to manage your dog's arthritic condition. Your goal is to provide the best treatment and supportive lifestyle that will decrease the degeneration of the cartilage between joints, alleviate joint pain, and keep your pet as healthy as possible. Remember, arthritis doesn't go away, but effective, managed arthritis treatment for dogs can ensure that you will both enjoy the coming years together.

The Proper Syntax of German Shepherd

By Larry Brallas

I was amused to find out that nearly 1 in any 3 individuals spell the word German Shepherd mistakenly, spelling them German Shepards instead. I am amazed that this word is so normally mistyped, & I'm even more surprised to learn that I spelled it like this for so many years.

I loathe spelling words incorrect and I consistently attempt to avoid it. I am always careful to make certain that I am on point with my spelling, but like any individual, every so often I just slip up. The great thing is that I have an easy way to keep in mind how to properly spell this breed of dog correctly.

Follow my little procedure here & you most certainly will always recall that it is not German Shepards, rather shepherds.

Think back to why this breed of canine was bred and maybe you will already figure this out. The German Shepherd was created as a working dog, & it was only in the late 1890s that this breed came to life.

Folks in Germany needed a dog to help herd sheep. Think of the words herd and sheep this time, and then reverse them. You don't think of the German Shepards (I am kidding) now as sheep herding canines, as they're routinely used by police to combat crime, in airports to sniff out substances, & in other settings that depend on the dog's great olfactory senses.

This, though, is why they were bred, and remembering this will make it a lot easier to write the word properly.

As long as you aim to keep this in mind every time you spell out the word, I suppose you most certainly will get it correct from here. Don't feel too badly about it because 1 in 3 people do spell it mistakenly.

I hope this has been useful. Here's to a few spelling successes later in life when it comes to this fantastic variety of dog.

Use Expensive Cat Food As Treats

By Moses Wright

Cat owners may get samples of cat food that is more expensive than the cat food they normally use. If a cat owner receives a sample of expensive cat food, why not use expensive cat food as treats?

Using a cat food sample in place of a cat's meal of its normal food can cause some cat to develop an upset stomach. Many cats have difficulty adjusting to abrupt dietary changes. Abruptly changing cat food can cause diarrhea.

By using small parts of the sample of expensive cat food as cat treats for a few days, the cat owner can use the cat food sample and greatly reduce the risk of upsetting the cat's stomach. Some cats may not have stomachs this sensitive, but many do.

To use expensive cat food as treats, the sample of expensive cat food needs to be dry cat food. Wet cat food is difficult to use of cat treats and may also spoil if either left open or kept in the refrigerator for too long.

For samples of wet cat food, replace only part of the cat's regular cat food with half of the sample or less. Then, do the same with the mixture of the expensive cat food sample and cat's normal food the next day. Remember to keep open samples of wet cat food in the refrigerator.

The cat food sample can be divided among cats if there is more than one cat in the household. By dividing the sample among multiple cats, no single cat should get enough to cause it become ill. Many sources suggest limiting the use of a cat food sample to know more than half of a cat's meal to avoid stomach upset.

Cat owners who are interested in receiving cat food samples should periodically check the websites of cat food manufacturers. Free sample offers are often featured on the websites of cat food manufacturers.

Cat owners often need to register on the websites of the cat food manufacturer to receive the cat food sample. The cat owner may continue to receive additional cat food samples from that cat food manufacturer after the cat owner has registered.

Cat Urine Smell -Get Rid Of It The Easy Way

By Sonia Kekkonen

Cat urine. One of the less appealing odors one can ever have in the house... And trying to get cat urine out of carpet is for some people in the same category as having a root canal.Yes, it is distressing and it is easy to get angry with the cat. Who wants a smelly house?

Cat urine is one of the more challenging odors to remove especially when not using proper cleaning products. When cat urine is allowed to dry in a carpet, amino acids in the urine actually bonds with the fibers of the rug.

The salts in the urine also bonds with the carpet through an ionic charge. These bonds will get stronger the longer the urine is in contact with the carpet. Homemade cleaners will not release these bonds. Steam cleaning will not release the bonds either, sometimes steam cleaning will make it worse.

Some commercially available "pet odor removers" work by masking the odor by masking the foul smell caused by the bacteria that is using the urine as it's source for fuel.Other products use compounds in the attempt to absorb the smell.

There may be an immediate relief from odor using these products, (or a home made one) but as you may have noticed, the smell comes back especially on damp, humid days. In order to eliminate the urine totally and comlpetely, you need to use a cleaner which will actually consume the urine. This is done with a cleaner containing not only enzymes but bacteria as well.

So, you got cat pee on your rug? What is the first thing you should do?

1. Blot or mop up as much urine as possible. Lay down absorbent towels and walk on them. Care should be taken if water is added to the spot -it can easily spread and make clean-up more difficult.

2. Use a cleaner based on enzymes that will actually consume the urine. Inject it into the padding, and then spray on top of the carpet. Pet the cleaner into the carpet.

3. When using a proper cleaner, that is all you need to do. No rinsing needed. Keep your cat away from the area until it is completely dry which can take a few days.

It can be easy to get angry with the cat for not using the box. But try to control yourself and don't scold or get angry at your cat.

Inappropriate urination is a symptom that something is not OK. You may need to investigate what caused your cat to not use the box along with some enticement to use the box again. Not correcting the reason your cat is not going in the box may keep you cleaning your carpets and furniture over and over again.

Finding and eliminating the cause of the behavior while cleaning the urine with the proper cleaner will assure that you will have a sweet smelling home, and a cat that goes in the box.
