Understanding Why Your Pooch Chews And Controlling The Behavior

By Ed Jamison

Puppies chew as a way to explore and relate to the world around them. The activity is instinctive to them. Unfortunately, if chewing behavior is focused in the wrong direction, it can result in damaged clothes, shoes, and furniture.

It's important to realize that adult dogs also chew, but do so for a variety of reasons that extend further than mere exploration. For example, your pooch might feel separation anxiety if you leave him alone for long periods. Or, he might be bored. This happens often when canines lack an outlet through which to expend their pent-up energy. Your pooch may also chew on your belongings as a way to get your attention.

Whatever the reasons for the destructive behavior, you can control the problem. Below, we'll provide a few tips for training your dog to avoid chewing on your possessions.

Use A Crate

Crating your puppy is an ideal strategy for confining him when you're unable to watch him. Not only will he come to see his crate as his personal space, but you'll prevent him from ruining your furniture and clothes when you're not home. If you plan to keep him crated, be sure to give him a few toys with which he can entertain himself.

Provide Chew Toys

The goal is not to eliminate your pooch's penchant for chewing; again, that's his way of relating to the world around him. Instead, redirect the behavior toward objects that are acceptable for him to chew.

For example, all pet supply stores sell chew toys that can keep your canine occupied. Some are rubber; others are made from durable rope; still others are designed from strong leather and rawhide. Any of these toys will keep your dog's attention while providing the stimulation he desires.

Keep Your Departures Understated

Owners often unwittingly worsen their dogs' separation anxiety by overstating their departures. When they return home, they're surprised to find their furniture partially destroyed. Downplay leaving your home. The bigger fuss you make, the more likely your dog will sense that your leaving is a major event. That raises the likelihood of his chewing.

Provide An Outlet For Exercise

When canines lack an outlet for physical activity, they become bored. Moreover, their energy level remains unspent and stifled. That's a recipe for destructive chewing. Make sure your pooch receives at least an hour of exercise each day. He's less likely to suffer boredom and he'll have less pent-up energy to direct toward your couch.

Offer A Swap

Puppies find chewing new objects to be irresistible. If you see your pup gnawing on something he shouldn't be, take the item away and replace it immediately with a chew toy. Avoid getting into a tug-of-war contest with him. Instead, have a toy on hand and swap it quickly.

Some dogs love to chew almost anything they can get into their mouths. Other canines are more selective, though they can cause just as much destruction. Learn to control the problem by redirecting your dog's chewing behavior to objects you don't mind being destroyed.

Why Pet Insurance Is Of Vital Importance For The Welfare Of Your Beloved Pets

By Eddie Lamb

Almost every household has at least one type of pet. Many households have multiple pets, being blended with a combination of dogs, cats, fish and birds. Fish and birds rarely have health problems which require expensive veterinary care. However that is not the case with a dog or cat. When a dog or cat is injured or seriously ill, it can cost the pet's owner a huge sum of money to correct the problem. This is why pet insurance makes financial sense for the family, and stands out as an act of love for the pet.

By purchasing a policy for your pets, you are protecting the financial interests of your family. Vet bills for an emergency situation can put you thousands of dollars in the red. You can avoid this with a very low cost insurance plan.

Dogs and cats can be aflicted with some of the same types of illnesses that humans have to contend with. Cancer is just one of the illnesses we have in common. Even though a cat or dog may be small compared to a human, the financial responsibility passed on to the owner for treatment of a serious illness can be huge. If your pet needed surgery and had to stay in the veterinary hospital it could wind up costing a small fortune. An insurance policy for your pet would help you cover the cost of treatment.

Just as you and your family members have regular doctor visits, such as physician and dental visits, your pets have them also. If you had an insurance policy which covered pets, you would be able to cut the cost of your veterinary visits. Preventative care is often covered in most.net and cat insurance plans. This helps keep them healthy so it is less likely they will get sick. It saves the insurance company money over the long term.

When you decide to buy insurance for your pet, you will find that there are several variables which can determine what type of policy you choose. The amount of your deductible for catastrophic care can vary, and that will in turn affect the amount of the premium. Since the typical insurance policy for a pet is less than $20 per month, it is a very economical way to save money should your pet need care which could potentially cost thousands of dollars.

One of the main factors you may want to keep in mind while looking for a health insurance policy for your dog or cat is the amount of your deductible. You should also make about whether or not the policy will cover multiple pets. Some insurance companies will allow you a discount for insuring more than one pet.

One of the factors which will help you in finding insurance for your cat or dog is the fact that it has become quite popular over the last several years. Insurance companies have recognized this trend and have scrambled to create policies fashioned exclusively for pets. You may be surprised to find your insurance company offers this type of insurance. Before you go anywhere else, you may wish to inquire with your current insurance agent.

No pet owner will deny that their pet has achieved family status. Since we all love our pets so much, it only makes it easier to justify the small cost of pet insurance. You will be covered should your pet need extended veterinary care, and your pet will be covered should they become critically ill or injured.

Pet Insurance - Use it to Protect Your Pet

By Bastian Wellerding

Have you recently adopted a sweet young kitten or adopted an older dog and plan on being his forever home? If you are a concerned pet owner of any sort, you'll discover that taking some time out to consider the benefits of pet insurance is one of the most important things you might do. Take some time to consider why you need pet insurance and how it can make you feel safer.

When you look at pet insurance, you'll find that it works much like your own health insurance does. There is a premium to pay for a time period, and as long as you keep up those payments, when your pet needs to visit the vet, the visits and care should be covered by the insurance.

While it may seem like just another bill, this can really help to ease your mind when you have the pet insurance. It's very well known that the cost of a vet can get really expensive, even for a checkup that is routine. If you have a big problem, such as a pet illness or an accident, the fees can be even more expensive for you.

Every year, thousands of pet owners need to make a very hard choice regarding their pets and their finances. When it can take thousands of dollars to give your pet a chance at living or living more comfortably, too many families find that their money makes the decision for them. If the money is not there, it is simply not there.

When you purchase pet insurance, you can spare yourself from ever needing to make this choice, because your pet will simply be treated. If you have been paying your premiums, you'll only be responsible for the deductible, which will vary depending on what your needs are and what your policy is like. Then your pet's injuries will be treated and the insurance will start paying off.

Trying to figure out when to get the insurance for your pet? Well, it's a good idea to get started as soon as possible. As soon as you get a new pet, you never know what can happen to the pet. So, it's a good idea to quickly get the needed pet insurance on your new pet. This way you don't have to take a look at your budget to figure out whether or not you can treat the pet. You'll have the insurance that you need to keep your pet covered.

If you are going to buy pet insurance, take the time to compare various providers. Not all policies are the same. You want to find one that is a great fit, and the least expensive one is not always the best one for you. Make sure you think about the needs your pet is going to have when making the decision.

Peace of mind can be acquired when you get the perfect pet insurance policy for your new pet. With the right insurance, you can keep your pet healthy without hurting your budget. This way your pet will get the care needed if something bad ever happens.

Crate Training A Puppy Using 5 Simple Steps

By Hannah Clapham

Crate training a puppy is going to be an excellent way to raise a pooch from puppy-hood to old friend. Many people get worried that it may be cruel, although if used for the right reasons, nothing could be further from the truth. Utilizing crate training to educate your puppy can be a valuable and humane approach to establish your puppy a place in your home as well as in the world and give your pet a strong feeling of security.

Crate training is a widely used home training technique which provides your dog with his own special den and establishes acceptable behaviours for life in your house, including housebreaking. But crate training your puppy is not only useful for house training. Here are five important guidelines for crate training your dog.

1. Don't send your puppy to their crate as a punishment. Do not let there be any anger in your voice. In the event that your puppy misbehaves, just lead him to the cage with encouraging words. Imagine it as a happy place for your dog to go for a period of time when necessary. Try and sit down with your puppy a while and pet him to reassure him that you aren't angry.

2. Give your pet's crate a homey atmosphere. Offer the puppy blankets, chew toys, along with a cushion to rest upon. However, do not put food or drink in the cage with him. Make it an area to rest.

Next, do not keep your puppy in the cage all of the time. For example, never leave him inside the crate right through the day when you are at the office. Dogs are pack animals. They're social and so they want to be with other animals - which includes us. To a dog, the family unit that lives in his house will be other members of his pack. Of course, people don't quite smell like other dogs, however that's not the point. You are going to be hard pressed to find a dog that doesn't think of itself as 'people.'

4. When crate training a puppy, always be consistent. In the event that your dog is jumping on folks and you are using a cage in order to redirect him away from this habit, make sure to crate him each and every time an incident happens. Remember to keep it a pleasurable experience for your pup simply by allowing your friends to drop by the crate and say hi to your dog and pet him.

5. Crate training your puppy furthermore is very valuable by using 'scheduled crate time.' Just like youngsters, even a puppy has to rest. These amazing creatures, known as 'man's best friend,' are light sleepers, constantly on guard to keep us safe. Providing them with some 'nap time' will make them much better behaved and more relaxed as well.

If you would like a well trained dog, crate training is definitely a trusted and well tested way to go. Applied the right way it's going to make your dog acknowledge you as his master or 'pack leader' and that is the first important step in any successful puppy training.

Employing a crate to teach your new puppy provides it his own tiny 'kingdom' and you also will be able to also have lots of fun decorating it and dressing it up. If done right, along with love and compassion, crate training your new puppy is sure to offer the two of you a wonderful friendship free of a good deal of the 'drama' of dog ownership.

Eliminate Dog Jumping

By Matt Closson

If you have ever owned a dog, one time or another you have probably dealt with this problem. Your dog is so happy to see you that he jumps up on you getting his muddy paws all over your new suit or dress. Or even worse, during his excitement he jumps on a smaller child and knocks them down or scratches the child's face, arms or legs.

Well guess what? Its all your fault.

You see, when your dog was just a little pup, you would be so excited to see that little guy that he would come to you in his cute puppy way and jump on your ankle (or barely reach your knee cap at this point) and you of course would bend over and pet him or even pick him up.

You have just taught your puppy a very nice lesson, if he runs up to you and jumps on your foot or knee he can get praise and affection. Fast foreword a few months and now that little puppy is as much as 5 or 6 times the size that he was, but still thinking like a puppy, ("if I jump on my owner he will give me love"). He does not know the difference between his puppy size, of say 4 or 5lbs and his new size of maybe 30 or 40lbs or more, not to mention he is taller now and can reach up to your arms or chest. All he knows is that he wants the praise and affection that he has missed all day long and you taught him how to get it, by jumping.

Is it bad manners to have a dog jump on you?

You have to put your foot down and make it clear that jumping is no longer an accepted behavior. When is jumping O.K.? Many owners of toy breed dogs or smaller dogs expect their dog to jump up. This is totally up to you. But, when any dog jumps on an unsuspecting guest, it can cause a bit of an awkward moment. This is why teaching your dog the "off" command is also a good idea. You can train your dog to jump on your command; we will get into that later.

For larger dog breeds, there really is no debate on this matter. You should either never allow him to jump or at the very least work the "off" or "no jump" command in to their regular training. After all it is one thing to have to deal with scrapes or soiled cloths due to your own dog, it is quite another to have to deal with him jumping on a guest or stranger.

Reasons why dogs jump.

Most often dog jumping happens out of pure excitement. Usually greeting an owner after a long absents or when adrenaline is running high. Some dog don't jump at all accept when greeting their owner after a long day away.

The number two reason dogs jump is a bit more complicated and serous. It has to do with dominance. Dogs social order comes from a pack mentality and the only way to move up the ranks in a pack is to show physical superiority over the lesser animal. Dogs often demonstrate their superiority over other dogs by mounting or jumping on the lesser dogs back or shoulders.

Well, how do you know if you have an over excited dog that likes to jump on you or a dog that is trying display is dominance? This is fairly easy to determine, if your dog only jumps on you upon returning home from a long absents, you needn't worry, this is just a bad habit that can be corrected. If you find that your dog jumps on you or others in many different situations, then you have a communication problem with the hierarchy in your house and it might be a good idea to brush up on your alpha dog skills.

On the other hand, if he jumps in a variety of situations, you could be dealing with more of a dominance issue and symptoms of a more complicated problem of communication and attitude. The longer this type of behavior is allowed to happen the harder it will be to regain control of the jumping issues. At this point and time I would highly suggest that you study alpha-dog techniques (tip: you can find more great information on dealing with a dominate dog over at Ez Dog Training At Home, you can find the link for this web site at the bottom of this page)

Your actions are key to eliminating this annoying and possibly dangerous habit of your dogs. As with most all dog training consistency in your training will speed up his learning curve and prove to be more reliable. To stop dog jumping you have to make it clear to your dog that jumping is no longer tolerated.

This means sticking to your training plan every day until there is not longer a problem. Your dog will not stop jumping on you if you allow it one day and not the next or allow him to jump on you but not your children. If you send this message to your dog he will jump when ever he feels like it.

Dog trainers world wide agree that the most effective way to curb unwanted behavior (jumping) in your dog is also the the easiest, and that is to simply ignore the bad or unwanted behavior and reward the wanted or good behavior. There is no need to yell or over correct. Negative attention is still attention and that is what your dog seeks when jumps on you.

Most professional trainers agree that the most effective way is also the easiest way to stop unwanted behavior (such as jumping) in your dog is to ignore him whenever he jumps. No need to yell or correct, although that is usually the first thing that comes to mind when your dog just ruined another pair of nylons or scratch one of your children.

Let your body do all the talking. When your dog jumps on you or is about to jump on you, turn your back and face way from him...i.e. the cold shoulder. Dogs understand your body language much more then the spoken word, so use your posture to get the message though loud and clear.

This technique works really well because dogs actually study and understand body language more so than the spoken word.

Reinforce his good behavior (all four paws on the ground) with lavish praise. If, at this time he gets overly excited and goes to jump on you again, turn away and give him the cold shoulder. Even if there is only a split second between cold shoulder and praise, keep this up until he is calm. Dogs have a short training memory and can only associate the reaction you give with the behavior he presents to you at that moment. So, don't worry that you may confuse him.

Dogs inherently want to please you and it want take long for him to figure out that four on the floor pleases you.

Finding the Best Dog Collar for Your Needs

By Jack Oldman

When you get a new puppy or dog, you want to keep it safe by choosing a sturdy collar that fits the breed and your lifestyle as well. The best dog collar is the one that fits your dog comfortably and will keep both them and the public safe. Your dog trainer or veterinarian can recommend a collar type, but it may be some time before they get back to you with an answer. In this article, we will discuss the three most popular types of adjustable dog collars and take a look at a few other styles as well.

Buckle collar. This seems to be the favorite variety of collar. It includes a ring on a belt to which you can fasten dog ID tags. You can also use it to attach a copy of your dog's license or inoculation verification. If you do not want to use the regular metal tags, then a leather tag pouch is also available for these kinds of collars.

Muzzle collar. These sizable dog collars are a cup-like apparatus or mesh cover that is positioned over your dog's mouth and nose and attaches to its head by way of straps that go behind the ears.

Head collar. The head collar is not unlike the muzzle collar, but has some noteworthy differences. It keeps your dog's head fixed and doesn't permit the animal to strain against the force you apply on the neck.

Aside from the previous three styles mentioned, there are the metal choke chain and chain link type of collars. When dealing with large and heavy dogs, the chain type is the best dog collar to use; especially during intense training sessions or while taking your dog for a walk in open and public areas. This is the only pet collar that is sold by the length of chain you need.

Of course, over and above utility, you shouldn't make your dog wear a collar that doesn't fit his personality, size or breed. A choke or spiked dog collar on a toy breed may seem funny and novel, but it is not necessary and can be traumatic for the animal. Something more appropriate to the dog's small size and breed is in order, such as a ribbon collar or something similar. The best dog collar is one that fits your dog well and keeps him safe.

A Happy Dog Will Live and Love Longer

By Tornoe Rose

Having possession of a pet is not an easy job. You have a series of duties to fulfill so that they can develop into well-mannered adult creatures in just a few years. These duties include fulfilling their basic needs as well as their whims. From their food to their dog house, from their grooming to their health necessities, all these tasks will be yours to worry about as soon as you have the contract signifying ownership of your pet. It is no different from being a good model to a human baby.

Dogs top the list of the most preferred pet in the history of mankind. They are loyal, easy to train, smart and fun to be with. Whether you like guard dogs like German shepherd or pit bulls, toy dogs like Japanese Spitz or Shih Tzu, sport dogs like Golden Retriever and Doberman, you will surely be having the time of your life if you spent it with these wonderful animals.

If you think your dog can offer numerous advantages in your life, doesn't it follow that you should also do everything possible to keep them in an ecstatic state? It's the least you can do for all the fun moments that they have shared with you. Here are some cool ways to make your canine happy. Read on.

First of all, keep your dog in a blissful state by providing it with the requisite food, water, exercise, dog house and a regular visit to the nice neighborhood veterinarian. Make sure that you are offering them with nutrients that are fitting for their breed and chronological age. Just like human beings, big dogs need more calories while the small ones can make do with just a serving of dog food. In the same manner, young pups have slightly different nutritional necessities than their older counterparts. Dogs with longer hair also need more vitamins and minerals compared to those with thinner and finer coat.

A regular workout schedule is also important for your four-legged friend. Walking them in the park or playing Frisbee with them three times a week for a minimum of at least 30 minutes per session is enough to give their cardiovascular system a good exercise. This will thwart the possibility of them getting fat or developing problems like an atherosclerotic heart.

A refuge is necessary to protect them from the extremes of the temperature. It will also act as their protection during windy days.

Visiting the local vet will also ensure that they are in tiptop shape. Be conscious of their needed vaccinations. Shots against rabies and Parvo virus must be ticked off in their medical record. Heed your vet's advice if he has additional immunizations because they are aware that each dog breed has varying needs.

You may also give them a treat once in a while by giving them luxurious sessions in a dog spa. Cool shower baths, extensive nail clipping, fur conditioning, tooth brushing and other related services will make your pet dog feel so pampered. Consequently, these hygienic activities will also help remove the fleas that might have gotten stuck on their skin.

Spend quality time with your pooch. Aside from your bonding moments during your exercise session, make time to cuddle with him as soon as you get home from work. You may also try talking to him like you would any normal person. Studies show that relating with animals lower the stress hormone cortisol in the body. Therefore, this seemingly simple task will then give long-term benefits to both of you.

Lastly, dog-proof your home so that unwanted situations can be avoided or at the very least, minimized. Make sure all electrical appliances are kept or installed in safe places. Be careful about dangling wires and sharp or heavy kitchen tools and utensils spread just about anywhere. Place your things in their appropriate locations so that your pet dog won't trip on them.

Free Tips for Keeping a Healthy Pet

By Mr. John Sommer, PhD.

Assuming that you are a pet owner and that you probably own either a cat or a dog (as that is what most pet owners do) I am not going to teach you something that you do not know but rather bring your attention to something that you might have forgotten.

* Movement: Both a pet cat and a pet dog will need for you to make them use their physics. Their body need exercise to function and the larger the pet's body is the more exercise will be required.

* Exercise options: Whether you have a cat or a dog you can easily take the for a walk. Just put on a leash and go outside. If you live in a crowded city you might want to go to a park but if you live in the countryside you can just go for a walk in your neighborhood.

* Nutrition amount: I know you want to do what best for your pet and spoiling them by giving them all they can eat will not benefit them at all. They will get fat and the excess fat will harm their health condition.

* Healthy ingredients: Be sure to feed your pet with high quality food. You will find that you'll have to pay a little extra for the food but your pet's health condition will be improved drastically if you do.

* Caring: Be sure to express that you care for you pet via both words, tonality and physical gestures. Pets are no different than humans and if they don't receive love they'll become sad and lose the will to keep on living.

* Insure your pet: Every day thousands of pets get hurt by cars and there is nothing we can do about it. But instead of hoping that it'll never happen to your pet be sure to get an good pet health insurance that will cover everything if bad luck strikes.

* Keep a schedule: To make things easy on yourself be sure to use some kind of schedule. Feeding your pet should be obvious but things like medical checks and vaccinations might not be. For an optimal health condition of your pet youll need to remember these things as well.

Dog Harnesses or Dog Collars? Which Works Best?

By Jim Witt

As a dog owner you may be wondering whether the dog collar or dog harness is best. There always seems to be a question of which tool is best for walking, training, etc. They both have benefits, but which one is the superior of the two?

The answer is not an easy one. There are several factors involved when comparing the two items. A dog harness and collar are similar in a lot of ways, but they are also very different from one another.

Dog collars are helpful for training commands. If you are trying to teach your dog the "come" command, the dog collar works best. They also are used to hang necessary identification tags.

While dog collars can be used successfully when teaching your dog to walk on a leash, a harness is the less of a risk. Dogs are often fitted with choke collars by owners, which are then often used incorrectly and cause a lot of damage to their throats. If you choose to use a dog collar be sure to use a sturdy nylon collar that is the right size.

Harnesses, on the other hand, allow your pull to be spread evenly across their torso without any fear of damaging your dog's neck. If your dog is hyper-active or hard to control, place him or her in a no-pull harness. These harnesses are made of soft nylon with a ring in front of the dog's chest, instead of the top of its back.

Some dog harnesses can be difficult to get your dog in to. Dog collars are easier to put on. If you are turned off by all the straps and clips of a dog harness, invest in a step-in dog harness so all your dog simply has to do is step in to it and you are ready to go.

Dog harnesses can also double as a seat belt for your dog. If you travel a lot, a dog harness can prevent your dog from moving around your car or jumping out the car. Your dog harness can be connected to your car's seat belt to keep them safe and secure.

Both dog collars and dog harnesses can irritate your dog if he has sensitive skin. Find a soft dog harness or collar, and make sure they are the correct size. Both harnesses and collars have benefits when used with your dog, so decide what goal you are trying to achieve to make your best decision.

Train Your Dog At Home

By Adrian Logan

Last time before obedience classes were popular, nearly every dog owner relied on home dog training to get their dog to perform tricks and obey.

Dog owners really had no choice but to spend time teaching Fido at home if they wanted a well behaved dog. They had to have the patience, willpower, and desire to do so. Many people learned how to train their dogs from their parents who had owned dogs. Some read dog training books to learn how to do it.

While there is a ready availability of dog obedience classes today, you can still accomplish home dog training just as your ancestors did. This is an especially useful option if you just don't have the available funds to go to obedience classes with your dog.

Fortunately, dogs are simple creatures, and can be trained pretty easily with a mixture of consistency, praise, and treats. Give them enough of those, and they'll be doing whatever you want in no time. You can teach them not only to obey, but also to perform some cute tricks that your friends will find amusing.

The easiest way to conduct dog training is to model the behavior you desire your dog to do. Let's say you want him to sit on command, then gently place him in a sitting position and say "sit" very firmly. Look into your dog eyes while doing it.

Continue to do it for many times and eventually your dog will be able to sit upon your command. When your dog does correctly, remember to give him a treat and praise him. If he still cannot do it properly, continue to do the training and your dog will one day able to obey your command.

Some dogs catch on more quickly than others, so have some patience if it takes a while with yours. He will get it eventually.

One very important thing about training your dog. Be sure to keep praising and giving treats for the first several times your dog does the right thing on command. After a while, just praise your dog. Your dog wants to know you are happy with him.

How to Decorate Your Fish Tank

By Benjamin Coombes

Your tank should be decorated, your fish need places to hide in places to rest. Mainly though you will find a decorated fish tank much more pleasing to view.

When setting up a fish tank, the first thing that you should do is put gravel on the bottom. You can get your Gravel from your local dealer. Remember that most fish will look better in fish tanks with a darker or neutral gravel. A good rule of thumb for the amount of gravel that you should put in your fish tank is about 5 pounds for every one half square foot of surface area. You can mix your gravel's for an interesting effect, but remember after all your plants and other decorations going into your fish tank, you may not even see your gravel.

There are many choices for the background of your fish tank, printed scenes, mirrored backgrounds, or just about anything that you can tape to the back of your fish tank.

You can use large rocks for building blocks inside of your fish tank, your fish will love them.

You are going to need to choose between live plants, or plastic plants. Whatever you decide they will provide hiding places, shade, and beauty to your fish tank.

You can collect rocks, driftwood, and other items for your fish tank. But be careful you don't know whether they've been cleaned properly, and this could pose a danger to your fish. I recommend purchasing these items from your local pet store.

You can also purchase air driven ornaments to go in the bottom of your fish tank. Like treasure chests that open and close, divers, and sunken ships. No fishing signs are cool also.

The things that you need to know, a decorated fish tank very pleasing to look at and much more comfortable for fish. Dark colors of gravel bring out the colors of your fish. Choose travel with pebbles that are 1/8 to inch in diameter. In a query and background is attractive and it hides unsightly airlines and electrical cords. Is plants, rocks, and drift would for a natural decor, and add ceramic or action irritating ornaments for fun.

Exactly Why Smacking Your Puppy Dog Never Works

By Don Bradly

Educating a puppy takes a whole lot of time and patience. This is not something that you can achieve in a matter of days or weeks - it will take months. The trick to getting the most effective results from your little pup is to be firm with it but not deal out any physical punishment.

This kind of treatment is bad and it has proven to have a lesser effect when compared with showing a pet plenty of love and patience.

Since puppies are not any different to human babies, smacking your dog will not help much because it is still in its infancy and does not understand the difference between right and wrong. All you are really doing is scaring the poor animal and causing it to distance itself from you.

Similar to children, pups just do not know what you mean when you whip or hit your dog. Even though it might be doing something that you're unhappy with, it doesn't know that. What it knows however, is to associate pain and fright when it sees you coming its way.

By hitting it can causing your little new friend to be afraid of you, it will start to keep its distance from you and you'll never establish the strong bond that some dogs have with their owners. As the pup grows up to become an adult, this gap will further increase as well.

To raise a puppy into a loving family pet, an important relationship needs to be formed between owner and pet. Screaming your head off at a pup is another way you could damage your relationship with the dog.

As opposed to screaming at the top of your voice, a better way of dealing with badly behaved puppies is to be firm and tell it to stop in an authoritative tone of voice.

Teaching your puppy should be no different from teaching a child. Control your frustrations and never shout, instead be gentle and give it time to learn the difference between right and wrong. This is the only way to develop a proper relationship with your dog

There Is A Lot Of Planning Involved With Purchasing A New Aquarium

By Leonard Boyler

You will discover that the whole purpose of this article is to explain what needs to be done when starting a new aquarium. This can be a rather large undertaking, and so planning out the process in advance could prove to be a wise decision on your part. So in these paragraphs, we will discuss what kind of plans to make to get an aquarium prepared and ready for use.

As was earlier stated, it is quite a process to get the ball rolling on a project like this. You have a lot of options and decisions to make, and it all might logically begin with the decision on what you would like your aquarium to look like. You see, there are different types and styles of aquariums, and so deciding what you want from the beginning, will aid in making decisions throughout. Allow me to go into a little more detail.

The first decision that you have to make is what kinds of animals you want to support in your aquarium. As you probably know, there are really only two types for you to choose from: freshwater and saltwater creatures. You see, they both cannot live in the same environment and you will have to choose between the two. This will narrow down your choices, because you cannot have both kinds of habitats in one aquarium.

Along with the same decision making process, when you have decided what type of creature you are looking to support, you have to actually choose among several varieties. This is another big decision because you cannot allow certain creatures to be with other creatures because they cannot co-exist. Certain creatures fight with one another, and there is nothing you will be able to do about this. So it really pays to do the research about which specimens exist best together.

The size of the aquarium is another big decision that you have to make. While this might seem trivial in the bigger picture, this will play a very large role in what you end up having in the water. For instance, if you are wanting to get an aquarium based on one fish, you have to get the size aquarium that best suits that particular species, which might require a larger or smaller tank than you might have otherwise considered.

The set up of the actual aquarium should not prove to be very difficult. Usually it comes pre-assembled with simple instructions concerning the working parts of the unit itself. It is important to follow these instructions, however, because instructions such as running the filter for a minimum of 24 hours before housing animals is important to their survival. You do want them to survive, right?

You should also invest in items like the Eco Bio-Block, which will improve the quality of life and water within your aquarium for two years or better. This will help the water be clearer for the pets that you have, as well as make the quality of the water better for the pets to live in as well. So it is well worth the investment if you care about the animals you have obtained.

So now, you should have a better idea about the process of starting a new aquarium. While it might be a rather large undertaking, if you plan it all out in advance, you will find that the whole thing can run a lot smoother.

Teaching Your Puppy Not To Bite In 7 Basic Steps

By Hannah Clapham

How to teach a puppy not to bite is one of the first behaviours you will want to manage in your new puppy. If not prevented early on, this type of biting can eventually develop in an adult dog into a situation when someone could end up injured.

Remain Consistent

It is important that everyone trains the puppy in the same way. Teach your children to treat your puppy exactly as you do. Biting is a natural act in a puppy. It is natural for them to bite their litter mates as an act of playing and so they will want to do exactly the same with you or you children.

Act Like A Puppy

Understanding how they behave in the litter makes it much easier to stop them. One of their litter mates yelping will cause them to stop, so any time he nibbles on your fingers all you have to do is yelp just like him. He will stop biting and then you can just move your hand away. Don't play with him for a while after he bit you. Use praise and treats when you are playing and he doesn't bite at all.

Keep It Short

It's important that your training sessions don't go on for too long. Puppies don't have a long attention span. Do keep the training positive and your voice happy. Give lots of praise. Pet the puppy when he pays attention to what you are saying.

Plenty Of Toys

When you happen to be working on the way to educate a new puppy not to bite make certain the puppy is provided with toys to bite and chew on. In case your dog bites your hand say ouch or yelp. Keep consistent in this. Should your puppy backs off it is important to let him know that this pleases you.

Love And Attention

Your puppy naturally requires lots of love and attention. Loads of play time with the right toys is also important. Puppies like texture. It's a good idea therefore to keep plenty of different types of toys on hand. He will pick his favourite one. Use that one when you are teaching him not to bite.

Don't Give Your Puppy Old Shoes And Clothes

Nevertheless, do not provide your old boots and shoes or clothes to your puppy to play with. He has absolutely no idea what may be new and what is not. He could believe this implies it is Acceptable to munch up all your clothing and footwear. Puppies will become confused easily. He has to recognize that your things are definitely not his playthings.

Stick To The Program

Ensure everyone sticks to the program. You should never have the children let your puppy nip or bite them during play, this will certainly confuse the puppy. Train them to yelp and finish playing too. Make sure your puppy is provided treats for good behaviour and not for bad.

Don't forget, it is a natural thing for puppies to bite as well as nip at their playmates therefore it usually takes a bit of time to unlearn the behaviour. No one would like a dog that is aggressive towards anyone so it is well worth putting into practice these suggestions on the way to teach a puppy not to bite.

You can see something like this start in your puppy but it is also very common in much older dogs. The adult flea does the biting but they don't live long unless they are on the host dog. Hmmm, is that supposed to make you feel better?

Don't watch your dog suffer if you think it has a flea allergy. If it's loosing its hair and you see lesions on your dog's body, then get it to the vet. The sooner treatment is started, the better you dog will be.

More serious infestations might require multiple treatments before results are noticed. Continued monthly treatments will eventually take affect ridding your dog of those nasty little nuisances. And you will see a happy healthier dog for all your efforts.

Top Puppy Training Tips

By Miyagii Moto

Dogs are the most preferred pets by majority of the population ever since the beginning of history. They have proven themselves to be efficient, loyal, highly intellectual and trainable in various tasks. They can be sweet and meek to their owners but ferocious to total strangers. This makes them a perfect companion for those who are single and unattached as well as to couples who are just planning to start their own families. People from all ages can also quickly adapt to the presence of an adorable canine.

A lot of the dog's behavior has something to do with his breed and training in his days as a young pup. Since you can't do anything anymore about a dog's breed because it is an inherent part of his personality, you just have to make sure that he was trained well in his younger days so that you won't be experiencing any attitude problems when he is already a full grown adult. So the next time you want to get a new puppy as a pet, here are some of the well-kept secrets of puppy training that you should know in order to have a well-behaved pet in the future.

Before anything else, you must first establish a good rapport with your pet. Do not immediately start ordering difficult tricks that will make him want to scamper away with his tail between his legs. Set the mood first by playing with him, cuddling him and stroking his tummy. When he seems to be well rested and relaxed, you can start the drill by taking away his freedom. This might sound harsh but you have no choice if you want to impose discipline in his life.

Chain him, put him in his kennel or place him inside a crate to show that you mean business. At first, they might get a little noisy and howl until the wee hours of the morning, especially if they have been previously used to a very free lifestyle. Try to be immune to this kind of suffering. Sooner or later, they will realize that all their whimpering will have no effect on you. This will inculcate the fact that you are the boss and your orders must be followed strictly down to the last letter. It won't be long before they get used to this set up and will look forward to your arrival.

Next, educate him a simple trick followed by a nice food. The reward could come in the form of a tiny chewable bone or a slice of chicken meat. Just like the classic conditioning technique by prominent psychologist Ivan Pavlov, he will learn to connect the new trick with the treat. This will stroke their attention and whet their appetite for more chow.

Third, you can go the opposite way of the second step and let your dog learn through the negative conditioning process. Instead of giving a nice reward, teach him the power of the words no, stop and don't in a strong and authoritative tone. They will distinguish that it is something significant in relation to your voice.

Fourth, you have to be consistent. When you give a reward or punishment, make sure that it is commensurate to the good task or the bad behavior. Variety is something that needs to be avoided like the plague in this situation because your dog will get confused if you can't follow through with the initial rules you have set. The same rule applies to all the people in your household including your wife and kids.

Lastly, give choices. If there are tricks or tasks that he can't easily act upon like not digging the front lawn or backyard, then provide another alternative like another digging space beside the dog house yard.

Look After Your Dog's Grooming Necessities

By David E. Broadhead

If you have pet dogs, you need to take care of them at both the physical and emotional levels. Caring for your pet dogs physically will also make you feel emotionally attached to them. Physical care for your pets includes frequent exercise and feeding, grooming, and correct veterinary support when the requirement arises. Among these activities, grooming has a special significance and these are some points on the aspects of grooming.

Grooming your pet dogs primarily involves bathing and brushing. The frequency of these activities would be usually decided based on the type of your pet dogs. If you have a dog like Chihuahua with short hair, you wouldn't need to brush it more than two times a week to get rid of loose hair.

However, if your dog has longer hair then you need to brush his coat on a more regular basis in order to prevent matting. As you brush your dog, attempt to check the skin of your pet. This will help you take note of skin problems if any before the difficulty goes out of hand. Ensure that you take your dog to a veterinarian in case you notice any problem. Treating the problem on time inhibits future complications.

It is important to understand how to brush the dog. Always use the brush in the direction in which the coat of the dog is growing. Use grooming brushs that matches with the sort of coat your dog has. There are specifically designed brushs. If you find tangles in the hair, work gently from the edge of the tangle to untie. The skin around the stomach of your dog is a senitive area, so while you groom this part ensure that you do it carefully and carefully.

Besides regular brushing, canines also need bathing on consistently. The frequency of this gain de-pends upon the breed of your pet. Why the Eheim Aquarium Filters Rule

By Trevor J Rockberry

The aquarium filtration system is one of the most important factors in the lifeline of the fish in an aquarium. If the filter is a good one then it will keep cleaning the aquarium constantly. It will clean all the debris and dirt from the aquarium and keep the aquarium clean. The fish are also ensured a healthy long life. Likewise, if the filter is a bad quality filter, the pores will eventually clog up soon enough. Once the pores clog up the tank will smell and the fish will die very slowly. Therefore, it is very important, for the benefit of your aquarium and fish, to invest in good quality aquarium filters like the Eheim filter range. Worldwide, majority of aquarium owners trust the Eheim canister range to deliver the best filtration.

Amazing Features and A Trusted Name

The company that produces Eheim filtration systems is a very old player in the market when it comes to aquarium filters and filtration products. A filter by Eheim does not just help in making the water in the aquarium clean and hygienic but also constantly keeps cleaning the water by methods like layer filtering. Once installed correctly, this filter can ensure a spic and span aquarium that in turn helps the fish to thrive and grow better. The basic mode of filtration in the case of the Eheim canisters is mechanical filtration. The water is made to flow through the ceramic portion of the filter that helps the dust particles to settle down. Then, the water passes through many filtration layers to ensure that it is completely recycled, clean and devoid of any kind of impurity. Once they are washed and cleaned up properly, these filters can be used again and again.

The Eheim canister filters' main benefit is that they are very durable, proficient, and really compact. They come in several models, sizes, shapes, and fashions which are dependent upon the aquarium type. You can be assured that you will find an Eheim canister filtration system that fits your aquarium. Their somewhat key disadvantage is that they're quite costly. Additionally, a lot of the older filter models don't include self-priming. Thus, it's crucial to study and comprehend what type of filter type is necessary prior to purchasing it.

Only the Best Filtration

Eheim canister filters are available in four different types that can be used for different kinds of aquariums. The filters that have a cylindrical design function as mechanical and chemical filters. Filters that can serve as chemical, biological and mechanical filters have a square design. If biological filtration is required, then wet and dry filter series fit the bill since they come with a dry and wet filter that helps in filtering all the biological contaminants. These filters also come with thermal filters and incorporated heaters. People who have a salt-water aquarium can go for a marine thermo model since all the other models only cater to fresh water aquariums.

These days, Eheim aquarium canister filters have become the new buzzword in the town since they come with a patent pending technology and a multipurpose handle. They are easy to install and the filtration process can take care of all three kinds of impurities namely chemical, mechanical and biological impurities. This makes it easier to manage and keep the aquarium clean.

A Simple Guide To Buying A Dog Kennel

By Dennis Marshall

Well the most obvious starting place in any kennel or pet carrier decision relies on the size of your dog. Large breeds of dogs require enough space to move around and play. You need to buy large kennels for them. If your dog is small, you do not need to buy a very large kennel. It will be very expensive and the small pets will feel as though they are out in the open.

An important factor in finding the right kennel for your dog is in how high the kennel walls are. Keep in mind that it is natural for dogs to try and climb or even 'cling' to walls. If you happen to have a puppy that typically jumps on your gates/walls whenever they hear a strange noise, then you should probably invest in a kennel with a slightly higher ceiling so that the dog doesn't feel trapped while inside.

Local regulations will sometimes play a part in what type of dog kennel you should purchase. In some states, there are some restrictions put up by local authorities regarding placement of dog kennels on one's property. Local ordinances might require you to ensure the kennel is positioned a long distance from property lines. The laws might also define the space that you should dedicate for the kennel in your home. Make sure you understand the laws that apply in your area as the last thing you'd want your friends to find out about is that not only do you have to return your new dog kennel, but that you also have to pay a fine because of it.

Not all dog kennels are the same. Some can be used as a permanent living area for your dog while others are designed strictly for short-term traveling. Before you buy your first dog kennel, take into account how long you think your dog will be using it. There are many different kennel variations as well as substantial differences in price when you start comparing long-term dog kennels over ones designed purely for traveling, so make sure to include the length of use in your purchasing decision.

If you plan on keeping your new kennel outside then try to place it in a spot that has natural shade. The roof of your kennel should reflect where you plan on storing it. Just like with your own home, a better roof means better insulation from the heat & elements.

Dog Behavioral Problems - 4 Easy Tips

By James M. Hussey

Often, you may find your dog acting up, and if you're contending with dog behavioral problems, it's advisable to act as quickly if possible. If bad dog behavior is simply ignored, you may end up with a major issues on your hands. The good news is, there are a plethora of simple techniques to implement change in dog behavior issues in a humane and patient way.

Dog behavioral problems can range from adorable, but annoying little problems, to full on threatening issues such as a dog attack. Though there are various causes of behavioral problems, the solutions are pretty consistent. The old saying, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks," isn't a plan you should rely on and with consistent training, you can beat dog behavior problems. Let's look at a few user-friendly dog training tips.

1. Keep it Up. This is the non-negotiable piece of advice when training any pet. You may be tempted to let them slide every once in awhile, but this will only serve to undo your efforts. Be consistent with praise as well as with corrections and your pet will begin to understand that you are indeed the pack leader.

2. Positive Reinforcement is Vital. While many Old-School dog training techniques, e.g.: newspaper smacks, may seem initially effective, they may actually cause more issues later on. Building up and praising your dog helps your dog relate good behavior with good rewards, and is a very effective technique of addressing even the toughest dog behavior problems.

In brief, reinforcing good behavior means that you reward your pet when he or she does the right thing, and withhold the reward when they misbehave. Even the most stubborn dog will begin to respond to these strategies, when they are applied every time.

3. Get a Crate. One of the simplest ways to put an end to destructive behavior is to create clear cut boundaries. Crating them while you are gone, or when you just want some space is an effective and humane training aid. You may need to introduce them to the crate slowly, and grant them time to get used to being confined. The key is to be consistent and reward them for adjusting to time spent in their crate. A crate should never be used as a punishment, only as a safe place for them to go and relax.

4. An additional cautionary note for you and especially your immediate family members. Once the dog behavioral problems are addressed, and the corrective training has started, it is imperative everyone addressing the dog use the very same training techniques. Everyone must be consistent in the training of the dog. If not, your poor pet will become very frustrated and may act out even worse than before the corrective training was initatied.

Once you have these methods in place, you can easily begin to solve dog behavioral issues without undue stress to you or your pet. A well behaved pet is a happy pet and you'll appreciate the lack of destructive and potentially harmful dog behavioral problems.

A Simple Guide To Aquarium Filtration Choices

By Dustin Williams

An aquarium can add beauty and interest to a room and collecting sea life for it is often a fascinating hobby. However, it is important to understand some basics in order to create a healthy environment for fish. One of the most important decisions is which Aquarium Filtration system will be used.

Filters remove toxins and chemicals from the water. They can also be decorative and help create an attractive effect. An ideal system will provide biological, chemical, and mechanical filtering. There are several types of systems to choose from, depending on individual needs.

Aquarium filtration systems come in three basic types. Each has its benefits, and all of them do a good job. Canister filters hang outside the tank, They can clean the tank for long periods of time without maintenance and are a good choice for people with little time to clean tanks. Power filters also hang outside of the aquarium, do an effective ob of filtering, and are less expensive than canister filters. This has made them very popular. Another option is undergravel filtration, which is also an attractive choice. The system can be combined with colorful gravel to create a beautiful effect.

Your choice of filters also depends on future plans for expansion and what type of fish will live in the aquarium. You may not need a powerful canister filter for your first small tank but it still might be wise to buy an Aquarium Filtration system which will support any size setup. This would allow you to increase your tank size in the future without replacing the filtering system. It is also a good idea to consider the type of fish which will be living in the aquarium. For instance, if you plan to have baby fish, you might not want to use a power system, since these can suck small fish into them. A canister filter would be a better choice, although it is more expensive.. If you prefer the decorative undergravel system but want to make sure you are getting the best filtration, a powerhead can be added to the setup.

Whatever size or type of aquarium you choose, there is an Aquarium Filtration system which will fit your budget and ensure a long, healthy life for your fish.

Is Silica Cat Litter A Health Risk For Your Cat?

By Ned Dagostino

Cat owners love their pets a great deal. Their love is easily proven by the little things they do for their pets. One of these little things is cleaning their litter everyday. Another is putting up with the stench of that litter. Silica cat litter has appeared on the scene like an answer to a cat owner's prayer! Just an inch high layer of the new silica cat litter is sufficient to dry out the cat's waste and make it absolutely bone dry and completely odorless! Waste removal is now as simple as scooping up some hard, dry pieces of the cat's feces and disposing of it. This is as pleasant as it can ever get!

The number of times you have to refresh the cat's litter box is just once or twice or month compared to almost daily for traditional cat litters. Each time you refresh the litter box you just have to lay down an inch or so of the silica cat litter. This makes it very economical. No wonder cat owners consider silica cat litter to be a wonderful product. But there is a darker side to this wonder product. The question that's being voiced is whether silica is a health risk for your cat. Read on to find out...

Silica is rather like powdered glass. It can be quite rough on your pet's paws. Not only the bruising it may cause, you should also be aware of the danger that your pet cat may swallow the silica when it cleans its paws. This can have extreme repercussions if taken in large quantities. Even in trace quantities, the silica is likely to accumulate in the cat's intestines over a sufficient period, which is just as damaging to the cat's health.

You'll be surprised to know that the fact that you don't have to refresh the litter everyday or every few days, is itself a source of alarm among some pet owners and experts. They say that keeping the litter in the box for so long will encourage bacterial and microbial growth which will lead to a number of illnesses for the cat as well as for the people in the house.

The main advantage of silica as a litter is its cost effectiveness, $10 lasting you for a fortnight or more. Secondly, it is easy to maintain, since you only have to scoop out the dried poop everyday. Thirdly, you have to re-lay the litter just once or, at most, twice a month.

The opponents of silica cat litter say that the cost effectiveness is as good as that of traditional cat litters if computed over a month's usage. You use less silica cat litter, but this is offset by its high retail price. The second criticism is that the silica litter 'absorbs' the liquids from the cat's waste matter, and traps it within itself. This cannot be removed every day. With the ordinary clumping variety you can remove the entire waste.

One mustn't forget that silica can bruise your cat's paws. If these concerns put you off of buying silica litter, you can buy the variety which comes mixed with ordinary litters. These are more acceptable to many than the purely silica variety.

Silica cat litter is actually a very good product suffering from some severe drawbacks. The mixed variety can be a bridge between all-silica and all-clumping. This way you get the benefits of both varieties of cat litters. The clumping prevents your cat's paws from damage, and the silica litter prevents the foul odor from pervading the house!

Everything About Puppy House Training Methods

By Christopher Jenkins

Getting a new puppy can be one of the most stimulating experiences ever. It is possible, if you got a puppy, that he isn't been housetrained. While house-training your dog can appear just like an insurmountable task, it does not have to.

Praise is one of the finest methods to get your dog to do what you need. If your dog goes to the rest room outside, make a giant thing about it. Praise them time after time for a task well done. They'll be much more likely to urine or poop outside again if they get honored for doing it. When your dog pisses or poops on the floor inside, scold them as fast as you notice what they have done. If you wait too long to scold him for using the rest room within, he may not realize what he is's being hectored for. Watch for signs your dog needs to go to the john. If he is sniffing around, he could be searching for a place to relieve himself. As soon as you see signs that your dog may want to go to the toilet, take him outside. This will help him become used to going out there, and will help him realize this is where he is meant to go. Be certain to put a miniscule bowl of food and water in the crate with him.

But ensure you make a consistent time to let them out. Clearly in order to make this work you must feed them at the same time daily. If the dog stays sitting when guests arrive, ask them to praise him fast. You must entirely forget the dog if it doesn't sit at your command. Don't even peek its way as the punishment for not obeying commands. Dogs prosper on attention and when you disregard the dog the dog gets no attention. If you practice this continuously the dog will eventually make the link. Sometimes this occurs while the dog is bored or perhaps frightened.

Watch for signs your dog desires to go to the bathroom. If he is sniffing around, he may be searching for a place to relieve himself. As soon as you see signs that your dog may want to go to the rest room, take him outside. This may help him get used to going out there, and will help him realize this is where he's intended to go.

Before you bring a new puppy into your home, there'll be much you need to do to make the house safe for him to live in. To keep your baby dog secure, you should buy him a puppy crate. If you make a decision to buy a crate for your puppy, you'll need to think about the following. Remember, your tiny dog will grow quite speedily, so get a crate he is going to be in a position to grow into. A good idea is to purchase a crate that has another part that you may use to split the crate into two. Buy your puppy's crate before he comes home to live with you, and put it somewhere were your young dog can be close to you and see you.

When your dog arrives, don't introduce him to his crate immediately, but let him take a look at it in his own time. Puppies are naturally curious and frolicsome, so exploit these qualities, and make a game of it.
