As a member of the hound group, dachshunds were bred to hunt badgers and small game. They are derived from the oldest breed of German hunting dogs. Dachshunds are very active small dogs and have lots of stamina, when it comes to chasing prey for a long period of time. Being small in stature, allows them to excel in hunting small rodents such as woodchucks, rabbits, and mice.
The dachshund has three coat varieties: smooth, wire haired, and long haired.
Smooth dachshunds are most often found in a reddish-brown color. They can be brushed weekly with a soft natural bristle or hound glove and quickly wiped down with a damp cloth to remove excess dirt. Smooth dachshunds are most apt to attach themselves to one person and are usually more distant with strangers.
Most likely to be mistaken for another breed, the wire haired dachshund is the least common. Their entire body is covered with a uniform, tight, short, thick, rough, hard outer coat, with an undercoat that is finer, softer, and shorter, evenly distributed between the coarser hairs. However, the wire haired dachshunds' ears, eyebrows, and jaw are not like the rest of their hair. Wire haired dachshunds tend to be livelier and more outgoing than smooth hairs.
The long haired dachshund looks so much different than the wire haired. They don't look like they even belong in the same breed. With the long haired dachshunds sleek, shiny, and elegant coat, they require more brushing, at least once a day. They have a sweet personality and tend to be more relaxed.
Dachshunds make wonderful family pets and are an extremely devoted breed. Some dachshunds, on the other hand, may snap at younger children, especially those from other families. However, older children understand the importance of how to approach dogs better than younger kids. Dachshunds also like to act BIG, especially around bigger dogs!
