How To Install A Pet Safe Fence

By James Leapen

Dogs are some of the most playful animals out there, so it's no shocker that they are one of our favorite pets. If you are moving to a new home that doesn't have a fence already put up, you may want to consider a pet safe fence to ensure that your pooch remains safely within the confines of your yard. Price isn'thing to worry about either, as one of these fences won't not break the bank either. They are generally much more affordable than full-sized fences, as well as being more safe.

The traditional way to keep your dog same was to actually construct a fence with a gate for your dog. These fences can either be made of brick, wood or any other building materials. Once they are properly installed and the gate is kept closed they will prevent your dog from running outside the boundaries of your home. While this can keep your dog from running away or chasing after people you can not install these types of fences in every neighborhood. Installing a standard large fence may not be an option in your area.

A pet safe fence is the only option if you can not set up a traditional fence. Essentially these fences consist of a wire that is laid around the outside of your yard, and they function through an electronic collar and a receiver. How the system operates is straightforward. If your dog goes towards the border the wire, it will send a signal to the receiver on the collar, which will in turn send a light shock to your dog and keep them from coming any closer to the edge of your property.

The shock is mostly meant to keep your dog from trying to leave the yard, rather than encouraging them to repeatedly try. These fences can be the easy to install, and can take a huge load off of your mind since you can be sure that they will not run off and possible get hurt.

If you are worried that your dog may get out and either get injured or hurt someone else, then you should invest in a pet safe fence to keep them safe. This will prevent accidents from happening, and provide you with a solid peace of mind.

Benefits Of Owning An Older Dog

By Reggie Simpson

The prospect of bringing a new pooch home is exciting. Whether you live alone or have a young family with small children, the thought of having a cute puppy in the house may seem immediately appealing. After all, a puppy will make a great playmate for a young child. And who can stay upset after looking into a pup's longing, expectant eyes?

The reality is, even though puppies exhibit an engaging spark of energy and playfulness, they can require a lot of time and attention. Millions of owners have discovered that leaving a pup home all day by itself is a recipe for disaster. If you want to buy a dog, but you're less-than-excited about the idea of raising a rambunctious ball of energy, there's a solution.

Have you ever considered buying an adult canine? In this article, we'll explain the unique benefits of owning a mature dog. You may find that a mature four-legged companion is an ideal fit for your lifestyle.

Taking Him At Face Value

Think back to the last time you looked at a baby. If you didn't know the parents, you would have had to take a guess at the temperament and personality that child would exhibit decades down the road. Even if you knew the parents, it would still be a mystery. Puppies are the same way. They change as they grow. As they mature, they develop personalities that are often completely different than those they exhibited as pups.

By contrast, a mature canine offers very little mystery. Within a few minutes, you can accurately gauge his personality, temperament, and quirks. You'll know what you're getting into because you can take him at face value.

Better With Children

If you have young kids in your home, an older dog might be a perfect fit. They tend to be peaceful. They know their limits and have adopted behaviors that are safe among kids. In fact, many mature canines seem to intuitively take the role of protector over small children.

Puppies have not yet learned what type of behavior is acceptable and unacceptable. What's more, they're filled with energy and never tire of playing. These dynamics can lead to problems. Puppies often claw and scratch without realizing that doing so can hurt a child. Meanwhile, young kids often don't realize how their own rough play might injure a puppy.

Playing The Role Of Rescuer

By adopting a mature dog, you're rescuing him from homelessness, or worse. Keep in mind that many animal shelters are filled to capacity. That means many canines that are brought to the shelter will eventually be euthanized. Given that older dogs are adopted more slowly than puppies, their chances of being euthanized are much greater. You're saving him from that potential fate.

A mature canine can make as good a companion as a puppy. He'll give you the same level of love, friendship, and loyalty as a younger pooch. Plus, an older dog can offer several unique advantages over their younger counterparts.

Pet GPS: Get Your Pets Back Before They Are Lost

By Adam Webster

For most of us, a pet is more than just an animal that lives in our house; it is a part of our family. When we come home, we are expecting to be greeted by the woof or meow of our furry friend. And when we are not, we start to panic, especially if it is a dog. Cats are notorious for staring at owners while they are going crazy calling their names. In either case, having a pet GPS can help you pinpoint the location of your pet easily and quickly.

There are a lot of different types of pet GPS to choose from but they will all have a transmitter that stays on your pet, usually on a collar. They are battery operated and, in many cases, will let you know automatically when they need to be replaced. The transmitters will send you a message when your pet is not where it is supposed and give you its location. Or, anytime you wish to know where your pet is, you can ask the transmitter to tell you.

How the signal is transmitted varies from model to model. Some models use a cell phone modem to send the signals via satellite. Others use radio frequencies. There is one that uses mobile phone triangulation, rather than GPS.

However, most often, the tracking devices do use GPS. They differ though, in what other special features they have. Many will enable you to define multiple safe areas where your pet is allowed. They act like an invisible fence so that, as soon as your pet leaves the safe areas, the tracker will notify you and will continue to send you updates of the location of your pet. These updates can be sent via phone, email, text or instant messaging or fax.

There is some controversy over the effectiveness of GPS tracking for pets. Most of this discussion revolves around the idea that someone stealing your pet will just throw the collar away and the tracking will be worthless. But, if your animal is lost or runs away, then this technology could turn out to be priceless.

Another concern is the short life of the batteries. But many of these devices will let you know when the batteries should be replaced. Even if they wear out before you find your pet, you will at least know where it was heading. There are also brands that can store a history of your pets movements for up to a week.

Often, pet GPS devices are compared and contrasted with the pet chip. Although the pet microchip is sometimes called a GPS chip, they do not actually use that technology. Microchips must be scanned to get a reading. While they can be useful if a lost pet is brought into a vet or animal shelter that takes the initiative to check for a chip, they are useless if the pet is lost in the wilderness.

Is a pet GPS a smart purchase for you and your furry friend? That is partly dependent on your pet. But if they have a tendency to run off, or if there is concern that it could be inadvertently let out, for example, this technology may be exactly what you need to get your pet back safely.

Getting Rid of Fleas And Ticks The Natural Way

By Catherine V. Testaratti

There are many people I have spoken to are looking for a more natural way of handling flea problems with their pets. There are natural methods available that we will talk about in this article. Throw away all those environmentally unfriendly choices and use our solutions with confidence for the safety of your pet.

For those of us who have children, we are also concerned about our children being susceptible to the dangers of the chemical flea control. When we choose to have the pets, we also need to be responsible for their welfare. Choosing a natural treatment method is healthier for your pet and your family.

You can start with an age old method of brewers yeast and a little bit of garlic mixed into their food. For cats, eliminate the garlic due to the fact that onions and garlic are toxic for cats. For a sweeter option, try squeezing lemon juice or orange juice on their fur and rub it in; acting as a natural repellent.

When you give your dog a bath, notice that the fleas will fall off? Using liquid dish soap with a citrus base and a regular brushing will keep the flea problem under control. Fleas do not take hold of the hair shaft so these solutions are relatively easy.

If your home has carpeted flooring, then it's best to remember that you must vacuum regularly. There is a worm called a beneficial nematode, which is different than the worms that cause heart worms, and they feed off the larva of fleas. These can be put in your yard to control fleas outside.

Well, we are going to get silly on you now. Ticks, the dreaded blood suckers, live in tall grass in wooded areas and are attracted to the body warmth. A good way to keep this pesky nuisance at bay is to cover your dog. Grab an old T-shirt and some old socks and give your dog protection.

While this will not completely protect your dog, it's a preventative measure that surely can't hurt. As we mentioned earlier, the ticks have nothing to latch onto so something is better than nothing. And just think of the looks you will get when you are taking your precious pooch out for his daily exercise.

A natural tick repellent is rose geranium oil. Rub some on the inside of your dog's collar and on their coat to ward off those pesky critters. Not recommended for cats because cats will have a severe reaction to these essential oils.

Remember that when you remove a tick you must do it properly, by getting the head of the tick from the pet. Summer time is the worst time for ticks and fleas so be proactive in prevention. Treatment of your yard, regular brushing and simple remedies and you should be pest free for summer.

The Popularity Of The GPS Dog Tracking System Continues To Grow Each Day

By Adam Webster

GPS dog tracking devices help dog owners to find their dogs should the latter get lost somewhere. Because modern GPS receivers have been miniaturized to a great extent and thanks to the minute sized mobile phone modems that are being sold on the market today it is now very easy to attach a GPS pet tracking system to your dog's collar and in this way keep track of your pet at all times.

However, there are only a few different kinds of GPS pet tracking systems available on the market today, though it is hoped that with new advancements in modern technology that this problem too will be rectified in the foreseeable future and dog owners will then have many more options to choose from.

A second important consideration is the durability of the GPS dog tracking collar. This is a factor that you must evaluate very carefully and in fact it is the biggest concern for those who are looking to keep tabs on their hunting dogs.

Ideally, such a device must be waterproof and in fact it should be handle more than just mildly wet conditions. Hunting dogs are going to put the device to severe tests and will in fact test the device's resilience to the maximum. So, it pays to use the most robust and durable device.

A third important consideration is understanding the location of the antenna. This is especially important because a GPS pet tracking collar can have issues with its signals; more so when the antenna is located in the chest region of the dog. Ideally, the antenna must be located at a higher level because only then will it be able to send stronger signals. So, review various options before making your final decision.

Also, if you wish to find the best GPS pet tracking system you will need to go online where there are various consumer resources to help you learn and understand just how these devices work and how you can get maximum use out of the device. Reading reviews of various popular devices is to your advantage and in addition you also need to find out what other users are saying about various device makes and models. This will give you a good idea as to what to expect from different devices.

The bottom line with using GPS dog tracking collars is that they provide you with peace of mind and will help ensure that you don't waste time fretting about what is going to happen to your pet should he wander out of his home. These devices also come with a wealth of features that in turn will minimize your and your dog's world to a more manageable size.

For the GPS dog tracking device to work you will need to ensure that your pet dog wears a collar into which a transmitter has been fitted in it. This transmitter will send an alert to the dog owner whenever the dog strays out of a pre-designated area.

Even better, you will also find GPS pet tracking models that can track not only your dog but another two pets as well - simultaneously. All you need to worry about is that the GPS dog tracking device that you buy must be easy which ensures that at least you won't have to worry about learning anything fancy in order to get the device to do its job.

Responsible Fish Keeping

By Leonard Boyler

Responsible fish keeping starts with how you set up your aquarium. Make sure that the aquarium can accommodate the fish you want. Many people believe that fish will swell to the size of the aquarium. Preventing them from growing to their fullest size by keeping them in a small tank is dangerous for the fish. Ultimately, you have to provide your fish a bigger tank if they outgrow their smaller tank.

Find out as much as you can about the fish that you plan to keep, to know what size of aquarium you need to get for them. It is best to factor in the adult size of the fish when choosing the size of the aquarium. But if you got a small aquarium and later it became too small for your fish, then upgrade as soon as possible to the appropriate size.

Find out if the fish you intend to have can live harmoniously with each other. A responsible fish keeper will never combine different variety of fish unless certain that they can live together peacefully. Bear in mind that different species have different needs for food, water temperature, and ph level. Make sure that your tank is not overcrowded with fish. Do not let their small size fool you into thinking that you can fit a small aquarium with dozens of fish.

When you want to dispose of some of your fish or aquatic plants, be sure not to release them in a pond, stream or other water bodies anywhere. This is because fish that have grown too big for your aquarium may not fare well in other environment or, even if they survive, they may cause an imbalance in the local ecosystem when they breed or feed on other creatures in the water.

Many tropical species found in aquariums simply can't survive the temperatures outdoors, especially during winter, so setting them free outside is essentially a death sentence. Instead, upgrade their tank size or return your fish to the pet store.

Besides the aquarium itself, you'll also need a water filter and a heater. These are necessary for the vast majority of fish that you may want in your aquarium, and it would not be responsible to set up an aquarium without these. The filter type your aquarium requires depends on its size. The heater depends on the type of fish you plan to keep, since different species have varying temperature requirements.

Even with a filter, responsible fish keeping also includes regular water changes. Test the water weekly to track pH, nitrates, ammonia, and other water quality indicators. You can reduce water changes with beneficial bacteria. The EcoBio-Block Family Products do a great job with this. Their unique system of delivering beneficial bacteria on a regular basis insures that your water will stay clear and healthy even while reducing water changes.

Even though your fish may be small, that doesn't mean that you can ignore them, or that they require less care than other pets. Never forget to feed your fish, and make sure they receive a proper diet. Regular fish food flakes may not be the responsible choice, depending on what type of fish you keep. Research their requirements to determine the best kind of food for them.

Responsible fish keeping means making a commitment to keeping their environment as healthy as possible.

By Robert Mcgill

Some dogs are not easy to train. Some people believe that such dogs are often stupid and dumb. This is not the truth. Such a dog may actually be more intelligent than others. There are many reasons why a dog may be hard to train.

Dogs are born natural hunters and fighters. So they keep showing their skills in anything they do. Some of them have a high level of intelligence and dominance. They seem to be hard to train due to these traits. Some are intelligent enough to guess what is going in our mind.

Some dogs have a high level of dominance. Once they have their attention onto something, they do not give up easily on that. So you should not stop them from doing something. They will stop when they feel like.

Train Your Dog

By James K. Bosley

Teaching your puppy right so it grows up to be a well adjusted dog is just as important as giving it food and shelter. There could be no one else it would learn behavior from but you. You are ultimately responsible when it comes to developing good habits and attitudes to your dog. There are certain behaviors that your dog must learn so it can live in harmony with the rest of the household and your neighborhood. There are only a few basic ideas behind how you should train your dogs and there is plenty of literature on DIY dog training.

The most common way a dog owner would train the dog is to keep it company and let it do whatever it wants as long as the dog owner isn't bothered by it. This is sadly not enough and the owner is taking on a very passive position. The dog must realize that the owner can assert his authority and assume responsibility so it listens to him. Many owners tend to think that it's needless especially when they have small dogs. Even small dogs need to be taught some manners and often enough, the small ones are nasty and would nip at a child. You can't let the dog lead you. It should be following your cue, although not all the time. You should be the one dictating which behavior is appropriate in what situation. To do this, you can't just let your dog be around other people or animals when it hasn't learned how to behave well.

What dog trainers usually do is encourage the dog to behave well with the use of praises and treats. Giving adequate praise will certainly tell the dog your approval of its behavior and lets it know how to behave in order to please you. You shouldn't go overboard with the praises especially when you are still in a training session. Focus on the training itself and don't send mixed signals to your dog that it could be time to play.

There are just some dogs that are too satiated to bother. When you have a busy schedule, you could be confusing your dog that wants to go with treats. You are clearly misunderstanding its needs when you're giving it more food while it has the urge to go.

You must establish yourself to your dog as its leader. It must understand that its welfare and everything else depends on you. Once you have this recognition, you should have no problems in setting the rules or teaching the dog how to be receptive to your commands.

Stopping Your Dog From Chasing

By Mark Walters

Chasing, whether it be cats, cars or even people, is something most dogs love to do. Unfortunately though, despite dogs that chase generally not actually hurting whatever it is that they chase, they still can cause themselves or others some harm in the process.

It is very irresponsible of owners to allow their dogs the opportunity to chase. So, it is important that, as the dogs owner, you see it how others see it, as annoying and dangerous. Don't worry though, it is something that can be corrected with a little time and effort.

It is not as simple as just yelling at or hitting your dog after it has chased something. You might think that doing this would make it less likely to do it next time, but it rarely does. It's instincts will kick in again next time around and the pain it suffered last time will be soon forgotten. Taking a proactive approach, rather than a reactive one, is much better.

Don't let your dog be in situations that that make it easy for him to chase his favorite things. With dogs who regularly chase after things, this may mean having to keep it on a leash or within a fenced yard. Keep your dog and those in the surrounding area safe until you learnt to predict his behavior and you have him trained to obey your commands.

Recognizing what your dog does immediately before it starts chasing something is the most important step. It is common for dogs to give some indication, such as a prolonged stare or a lifted leg, before they set off after something. Once you know what it is that your dog does, you can act before it does. You should be able to find this out fairly quickly as dogs are creatures of habit.

The obeying of basic commands is necessary for a dog to stop chasing. At the very least, your dog needs to respond to two - sit down and come here. It will be much easier to stop your dog from chasing once he understands and responds to these.

So, lets now look at how to train a dog to do what you tell it to do. First obtain the toy or treat that it likes the best. Place your chosen item 10ft from the dog and wait for it to start approaching it. Then either command it to come or sit down. After it has done what you want, say okay and let it have the toy or treat.

Get a friend to help you, once it has mastered this part of his training. Have your friend jog by you whilst waving a toy or treat and see what the dogs reaction is. Should the dog start to chase then give a firm command to it to come back to you or to sit down. Once it obeys your command, give it the reward.

Patience is necessary, but, with a little persistence, this approach always works. Remain positive and determined and you should have the problem solved within a week.

Advancing On a Leash And Staying: 2 Useful Commands

By Brad Morgan

Many dogs have an aggressive side, and you often see this when they are on leashes. Dogs that are normally well-behaved can lunge and snarl at other dogs and people as you walk down the street. While he needs exercise, you do not want to put others at risk. What can you do about leash aggression?

Exercise is essential for all dogs, and there are ways you can correct your dog's behavior so you can both get out and enjoy the fresh air. Walks don't need to be dreaded, just handled in a careful and consistent manner.

Dogs are like children in many ways. Often you can avoid bad behavior if you redirect their attention. If you see something that usually causes your dog to become aggressive, immediately distract him. Tell him to sit or lie down to keep him busy until the dog or person passes.

Dogs are masters at reading our body language. If you tense whenever you pass a person or another dog, your pet will pick up on it. He may think that you are scared and want to protect you. It is best to stay calm and act as if nothing is wrong if you can so your dog does too.

Muzzles and gentle leader harnesses can be useful training tools for dogs who lunge. Gentle leaders are designed to keep a dog from lunging, and muzzles will prevent biting. If you use them, make sure to train your dog at the same time. Don't plan on relying on these tools indefinitely.

Some dogs will persist at lunging despite your best efforts. If this is the case with your dog, consult with a professional trainer. You don't want to let the behavior go unchecked; your dog will become a danger to your neighborhood. as well as to himself.

Leash aggression isn't uncommon, but it is a potentially big problem. Start taking measures to cure your dog of this bad habit before bigger fixes are needed.

Teaching your dog to stay can be an immensely useful command, and it will definitely impress other dog owners. As always, use treats and praise to help you teach.

To learn to stay, your dog first needs to know how to sit and/or lie down. When he masters this, staying is the next step. Begin by telling him to sit or lie down. As he does this, put your hand out and say, "Stay." Make sure you use a firm yet calm voice.

Your dog may only be able to stay for a second or two at first. No matter how long he stays, remember to praise him and give him a treat. He will be able to stay longer as he practices.

As he progresses, teach him when it is time to move. Many people say "Come" or "Ok" to release their dogs. Again, make sure to praise him and give him a reward - this makes the training process much easier and quicker.

As you work on the stay command, demand that your dog stay for longer periods of time. Don't give him his treat until he performs to your satisfaction. Have him do a little more each time.

At the same time, make sure you're not extending your training sessions too long. Five minutes is enough to get great results.

Dogs do not respond to long training sessions. They get bored, lose focus, or fail to respond to commands. Remember also to be patient, especially at first. Remind your dog to stay often, until he gets it on his own. You may also have to reteach the basics a few times before it is learned. Knowing they are about to get a treat may make your dog antsy, but be patient and make him obey the command each time before he gets his treat.

As you continue training, your dog will be able to stay longer, even when you are not in the room. You will not always have to provide a treat, but do always praise your dog and his accomplishments.

No Idea How To House Break Your Puppy?

By Peter Albertony

Having a puppy or a dog is a serious business. It's fun for sure, but there's some work involved. And one of the first things you'll need to tackle when you have a new puppy is house breaking your puppy. Potty training puppies is no picnic.

That's not to say it's necessarily all that hard, just that it can be if you don't know what you're doing.

And if you don't want a completely disrupted household then you need to get it right. For your sake, for your puppy's sake and for the sake of everyone else who lives in the house.

And it may not even be a puppy you're house breaking. Not everyone starts with a puppy, some for various reasons end up with an adult dog. Not that it's impossible to house train an adult dog, but like a puppy you need to know what you're doing.

Now I'm not going to tell you all the steps to house breaking puppies here, I don't have the space or time, and I reserve that for my website. But I will offer a few tips here where I have space.

Firstly remember that you rule the house. In your dog or puppy's eyes you are the boss dog, you need to remember that. It is you who sets the rules and you who enforces them. This certainly doesn't mean that you punish your dog for breaking the rules of potty training, punishment isn't effective, but it does mean that you should learn exactly what you need to do to potty train your puppy, then follow through consistently.

But regardless of this you need to be quite consistent in setting the rules and explaining them to him and training him to respect them.

Instead of punishing your dog for a breach of the rules you need to use positive reinforcement. In the past it the accepted wisdom was to show him the rules, for example where his potty place was, then punish him for every breach till he got it right. This can take a long time and subject you both to a lot of stress.

And be prepared to do whatever it takes to successfully train your puppy or dog. Every puppy is different, just like kids are different. Some will get the message quite fast and if you use the correct methods to train him will be successfully trained in no time. Others will take quite a while. Understand that it's a process that you and your puppy need to go through that, even if you are doing everything right, will take as long as it takes.

Expect it to take a while, be happy if it doesn't rather than the other way round.

Remember like lots of other things it's the process that matters. Learn the right process, follow it consistently and it will work, when it works.

It's as much about you as him. You must know exactly what you are doing before starting, and stick at it. Find out much more on my website.

So, lets now look at how to train a dog to do what you tell it to do. First obtain the toy or treat that it likes the best. Place it about 10 ft. from the dog, and then allow it to go towards it. As it starts to move, command it to either sit down or come to you. After it has done what you want, say okay and let it have the toy or treat.

Get a friend to help you, once it has mastered this part of his training. Have your friend jog by you whilst waving a toy or treat and see what the dogs reaction is. If it starts to chase then give the dog the command to either sit down or come. On obeying your command, give it the reward. Should it ignore you and continue to chase then be sure not to give it a reward, even if you feel sorry for it.

Patience is necessary, but, with a little persistence, this approach always works. Just stay positive, patient and stick with it and you'll get there.

Identifying Heartworm Symptoms In Dogs And The Importance Of Pre-Treating

By Jennifer Richard

Many people believe that heartworms are an infestation that dogs can catch from other dogs or from eating things off the ground that have been infected. This is not the case. Heartworms are caused by mosquitoes who carry the larvae of heartworms and infect the dog when they bite it. When heartworm symptoms in dogs becomes noticable the dog usually has had the infestation for a long period of time.

There are many steps we take on a yearly basis to assure that our dogs remain healthy. Many people take their pets in for an annual check-up which includes getting any vaccinations that are due, having the teeth cleaned, and other tasks that a veterinarian must perform.

The rate of dogs who are being infested with heartworms in the United States is so high that it is very important to pre-treat a pet before they are exposed to areas where they may get bitten by mosquitoes. These treatments will insure that the pet does not become ill and require more expensive treatment.

Mosquitoes exist and multiply in any area that has standing water or new construction. There are many cases where mosquitoes will inhabit an area near a pool in a home's yard. It is very hard to protect a pet from playing in a field or yard where there may be standing water and this water can be a breeding ground for infected mosquitoes.

By the time heartworm symptoms in dogs begins to be visible the parasite has established itself throughout the dog's bloodstream. Heartworms can exist in a dog for several years without any symptoms occurring. It is only when they begin to clog the heart that symptoms will show. This is why treatment of heartworms once the symptoms appear can be so costly and often futile.

One of the main symptoms that a dog will show when the heartworms have clogged the heart is coughing. The cough will not sound like kennel cough but be more raspy as thought the dog is gasping for air while coughing. A dog may cough so hard that they will cough up blood or pass out in the middle of coughing.

Another symptom is shortness of breath. While the heartworms invade the heart, they also invade the other organs of the body. By the time symptoms occur the heartworms are usually lodged in the lungs as well as this makes it difficult for the dog to breathe normally. When they breathe it will sound very thready and uneven.

As the organs and brain are deprived of necessary blood and oxygen a pet will begin to lose consciousness often. They will often seem very tired and will be unable to do many of the activities that they once enjoyed. In most cases they will need the assistance of their owner to make a jump or climb stairs.

Heartworm symptoms in dogs that has become visible and noticeable to the owner is an indication that they have a severe infestation. Along with the heartworm infestation most pets also have other infections that result from the inability of their bodies to fight off infection. The treatment for these symptoms involves several trips to the vet for medication and treatment. Following treatment a dog must be kept quiet for several months and checked regularly until the infestation has been destroyed and they can return to health.

Dog Owners Guide : German Shepherd Aggression

By Mark Walters

Though they don't have as bad a reputation as Pit Bulls or Rottweilers, German Shepherds are still seen by many to be, on the whole, ill-behaved.

In fact, it is more of a reputation of being aggressive that German Shepherds have acquired. Owners of these dogs will mostly deny that German Shepherd aggression is a concern, but, unfortunately, the number of incidents of these dogs attacking people and other dogs can't be ignored. However, whilst genetics are a factor, the biggest problem is mis-training, or even no training, by their owners.

It is important to point out that not all (not even most) German Shepherds display inappropriate aggressive behavior. It is unfair to pin the label of "aggressive" or "dangerous" on this entire wonderful breed.Still, all owners of these dogs should be aware that it may potentially be a problem and, as such, should learn about and try to recognize the signs of German shepherd aggression.

So, what forms can aggression take? Some German Shepherds will be aggressive only towards other animals. Some will only become aggressive if a person or animal approaches them while they are eating. Others are aggressive toward strangers, and others even show aggression to some human members of the household in which they live.

Don't discount even minor forms of aggression, say to a cat or the postman, because these could easily escalate into something more serious. At the first sign of aggression being displayed, or even before this, you need to embark on a course of proper training. Not only could is save injury to other people and animals, it could also save your own dog's life.

Simply yelling at or hitting your dog when it acts aggressively is a faulty approach to take. For the most part, this makes the overall situation worse, as the dog becomes less trusting of humans. Also, a person is not going to win a "fight" with a German Shepherd. If he attacks you, you are going to be seriously hurt, and he is probably going to be put to sleep.

For German Shepherd aggression, the one course of action that should be taken is obedience training. The best results are seen with younger dogs, but don't let the age of your dog put you off from trying it at any time. Even old dogs can learn to be obedient, it just takes a little more time.

5 Smart And Easy Tips For Keeping Your Pooch Safe

By Eric Renfro

Your dog relies upon you to keep him safe both inside your home and outside. Most owners realize that they should keep their canines on a leash while they're outside in order to prevent their roaming into the street. But, their responsibility extends much further. In this article, we'll provide five tips that you can use to ensure the safety of your pooch.

#1 - Keep Dangerous Poisons Out Of Reach

Your canine's appetite isn't limited to the meals you provide him during the day. Given the opportunity, he'll eat items that are not meant to be consumed (at least, not by him). For example, he may begin eating antifreeze if it is left within his reach. He might also start eating mouse bait, pesticides, and your own medications. Each of these items can lead to significant health issues. Keep them out of his reach.

#2 - Tag Him

You may think it could never happen, but many owners have learned that their dogs are always willing to explore if they're given the chance. One of the reasons animal shelters in many cities are overflowing is because canines get loose and roam until they're found. Put a collar and tag on your pooch. Also, consider microchipping him. Then, once a week, check to make sure his collar and tags are secure.

#3 - Keep His Head In The Car

It is a rare dog that doesn't love to ride in a car with his head sticking out of the window. The problem is that it invites bugs and debris into his eyes. Plus, if you're involved in a traffic collision, your pooch can be injured. If he's going to ride in the car with you, keep the windows up enough to prevent him hanging his head outside.

#4 - Make Him Ride In The Cab

Owners will often place their dogs in the exposed bed of their trucks. This is incredibly dangerous for a few reasons. First, the stopping and starting can throw him off balance, often into the sides of the vehicle. Second, taking a sharp turn while your pooch is elevated on the side of the vehicle can throw him from the back into traffic. If you own a truck and you're bringing him along, keep him in the cab.

#5 - Have A Veterinarian On File

The worst time to look for a veterinarian is when your dog desperately needs one. You should have the name and contact information of a trusted vet within reach. That includes his or her office phone and an emergency number. You should also have a back-up veterinarian that you can take your canine to in the event your primary vet is unavailable.

Your dog's safety is at risk from accidents. Whether he's getting into rat poison, becomes lost, or is riding in the back of your truck, you don't expect him to get into trouble. It happens unexpectedly. Take the time to make sure he's as safe as possible.

Some Basics For Housetraining Your Puppy

By Eric Renfro

Puppies should be house trained as early as possible. Over 80% of dogs in the U.S. are kept inside the home by their owners. Failing to properly teach them to control their bladders and bowels will have frustrating consequences later. Fortunately, providing a healthy does of consistent discipline, patience, and attention upfront can help ensure your pup is housebroken early. There will be accidents, so plan for them. In the same way toddlers eventually learn to use the toilet, your puppy will also learn to avoid making a mess in your home.

In this article, we'll describe two important ground rules that you should follow when housetraining your puppy. We'll also explain why establishing a routine is critical and how to handle the occasional accident when it happens.

Establishing The Ground Rules

Owners who are trying to housebreak their puppies often punish them when they make a mess, even if they don't catch them in the act. Avoid doing this. If you see you pup having an accident, a stern "no!" is good enough. There's no need for punishment; in fact, punishing him can have a negative effect.

Also, be generous with your praise. If your puppy is doing things properly, let him know. Remember, dogs need positive reinforcement from their owners. If you only reproach him when he makes a mess and neglect to recognize his successes, it will have a lasting effect.

The Value Of A Routine

The importance of a regular routine when house training your pup cannot be overstated. The repetition reinforces positive behavior. First, make sure you're providing your pup with plenty of opportunities to go outside; once every two hours is appropriate because they cannot control their bladders for long. Second, choose a specific spot outside that he can use to eliminate, and stick to it. If he has an accident, place the rags you use to clean it up in that spot. The odor will remind him where he is supposed to eliminate.

Third, establish a routine that includes regular feeding, playing, and walking time for him. That will help him adopt a consistent elimination schedule.

Paying Attention And Dealing With Accidents

When your pup is indoors, watch him. Don't allow him to roam freely throughout your house. That is an invitation for him to leave a hidden "surprise" for you. Instead, confine him to a certain area and pay attention to signs that he needs to eliminate. When you notice those signs, take him to his designated elimination spot and praise him for his success.

As noted, your puppy will have a few accidents. Don't punish him. If you catch him making a mess inside, interrupt him without scaring him (avoid yelling or chasing him). Take him to his designated area so he can finish. Then, praise him for it. Too many owners are quick to punish their puppies for having an accident. The result is that a pup learns to fear his owner.

Housetraining a puppy requires patience and diligence. However, if you approach it in the right manner, your pup will not only learn to control himself, he'll learn to trust you in the process.

Especially for arthritic dogs, a dog jacket or coat will present relief to their cold bodies. Dogs not in good health can profit from a therapeutic dog coat. Step 1: Measure your dog's girth. The girth is the dog's chest behind the front legs.

Step 2: Determine your dog's neckline. This is very important for hooded dog apparel.

Step 3: Measure the length of your dog from the base of their neck to the base of their tail.

Even though dogs are born with their own coats, they always could use extra warmth for cold and rainy days.

Dog Training Tips -- REVEALED! -- 8 Proven Powerful Dog Training Tips. See them Boost Pooch Popularity!

By Scott Erickson

Fluff LOVES to bark. She barks at EVERYONE. I now own a pair of shredded shoes, (tasty leather) and she just did her business on the latest National Geographic!

Having a new dog can be a very challenging time when you're faced with behavior problems. However, excellent improvement will happen when you use a powerful system to teach your dog every day. With the right information and system, she CAN make HUGE strides in 7 just days.

Training your dog can be a lot of fun for both of you, as long as you have good information and some patience. With the right info, you'll quickly see that your dog can learn new commands quite fast, and you'll begin to enjoy the lessons. It's important for Rover to know basic commands such as Come, Sit, Stay, and Heel. This will help keep him out of harms way around cars, and in public parks.

Make one person responsible for training your pet. This is important because the dog will find it easiest to become familiar with one person and their training methods because of the consistency of the training method. All the people that share a dwelling with the animal need to know that they must follow the training formula of the head trainer. When kids assist, they'll need to be supervised, hopefully by the chief trainer.

Because dogs have limited attention spans, lessons should be 15 minutes long, or a little less. Lessons can be every day, or every second day. Feel free to skip a session occasionally if you don't feel up to it. It's important for it to be fun, and to be able to feel patient.

For fastest results, blend the commands you've been working on into the dogs daily life. For example, if you've covered the Sit command, try using that throughout the day. Remember to reward your pooch every time he displays the correct behaviour.

Since using food rewards offer a powerful incentive to your dog, it's good to use them. However, it's important to schedule the lessons for before mealtimes to make sure that he's hungry, and keen to earn the reward.

Start the instruction in a quiet area, by yourself. Try to make yourself the most interesting thing in the room, by minimizing distractions. This will make it easier for her to focus on learning the new command. Once she has mastered the command, add distractions. These could include having other people present, or conducting the lesson in a different room.

With this success achieved, you can begin to reinforce these new commands using different body language, in other areas of the house, and then outdoors with a leash. For example, you can voice the new command when you are standing, sitting, and while the dog is on your left or right. Your dog will begin to understand that the command means that he must do the same thing each time he hears it, regardless of where you are, or your body position.

Perhaps the canine that you will be instructing is no longer a puppy. This is not necessarily a disadvantage. Grown dogs generally have better attention spans, which allows her to learn faster. This can compensate for previous instruction that may need to be unlearned.

Previous training could cause her to link a certain behaviour with the command word that you're using. Maybe your dog is having trouble grasping what response you want for the word Come, use the same training sequence using Here, instead.

Every time that you move to a new location or situation using a newish command, you might need to back up a step in your training. This is very normal, and not a cause for alarm. It's part of your dog learning to focus on your command, despite many possible distractions.

8 Dynamite Dog Training Tips:

* Make one person the primary trainer

* 15 minutes daily, or every other day

* Quiet area with few distractions to start teaching each new command, indoors is best

* Use food reward, but train before mealtimes (the dogs, not yours!)

* After success, alter your body language, change location, and use distractions

* Use learned commands during daily life for reinforcement

* Reinforce commands by using during daily life (that's the funnest part!)

* Substitute command words for adult or previously trained dogs

Under What Circumstances Would I Crate Train My Dog?

By Brad Morgan

There are a lot of misconceptions concerning crate training. Many mistakenly believe that it is negligent and even cruel and that you are in essence locking your pet up in a cage. It is in reality a safe, humane, and effective way to train your dog.

Far from being "locked up in a cage," crates provide a needed sense of safety for dogs. And they are multi-purpose. From helping with house training to quelling separation anxiety, crate training is one of the most effective training methods available.

Small dens have sheltered dogs for time immemorial. Dogs feel safe and protected, and crates recreate this feeling. It is as important for dogs to have their own space as it is for humans.

This will help cut down on separation anxiety when you are not at home, which means you will not find chewed up shoes or furniture after being away.

Many dogs grow to love their crates and will prefer going in there when you're gone even if they have the option to stay out. Some even go in when you are home and they need some time alone.

If you introduce your dog to his crate for short periods, it will be tremendously helpful in house training. They learn to wait until they are let outside in order to relieve themselves. Until they perfect this, however, limit the time spent in the crate.

They cannot hold their bladders for that long when they're puppies. They should be in at night and while you are away from home. Make sure you have a regular schedule of walking and going outside so the dog learns when he can relieve himself and have a chance to play.

When training your dog, a crate can be your best ally. If you use it correctly, you will help create a safe environment for your dog. Do not use a crate as punishment, however. It should be a safe haven, not a place for discipline.

Here are some tips to get you started on your crate training process:

First, choose a good crate. They can be plastic or metal and should be only large enough for your dog to turn around in. If it is too big, then the dog will have enough room to eliminate and then return to his sleeping area.

If a dog has more space than that, he can create a separate area for going "to the bathroom." If he has room only for sleeping, the puppy house training process will be much more effective.

How do you get your dog into his crate? Start slowly by placing the crate somewhere that allows your dog to explore without feeling separated from you or your family. He will probably be curious and will want to check it out.

Get him to go in by dropping treats or a favorite toy inside. You can also try feeding your dog next to or in his crate so he will have good associations with it.

Once he's gone in and seems to feel comfortable, close the door. He will probably whine to be let out. This is perfectly normal ? it just means he has to get used to it. It's like an infant being laid in a crib.

They will whimper because they want to be picked up. If you let your dog out, he'll continue that behavior. Stand firm and have him stay in there. Don't let him out until he stops whining. Start with short periods and let him out to play or walk.

If your dog is reluctant to go into his crate, try encouraging him with a treat. Once in, leave him for a few minutes while you go into the next room. Let your dog remain in the crate while you are out of sight.

Stay in the next room for about ten minutes, and then come back and resume your position near the crate. Increase the time you are in the next room until your dog is comfortable with about thirty minutes. At this milestone, you can begin leaving him in his crate while you are not home.

Dogs typically respond to the safety and security of their crates very quickly. If your dog is reluctant, take the time to get him used to the crate. It will make him more happy and secure, and you'll feel better knowing your pet is content even when you are not there. It also is tremendously helpful in several aspects of training, so it is worth the time and effort it takes to help your dog get used to his crate.

How To Curb Your Dog's Biting Tendency

By Eric Renfro

Millions of people are bitten by dogs each year; young children are usually the victim. Not only does this result in a possible health risk for the person who has been bitten, but in the case of kids, it can leave a damaging impression of canines. That is unfortunate. The bond shared between humans and dogs is incredibly strong. Being bitten at a young age can lead to an emotional scar that destroys any chance of enjoying that connection.

The good news is that a canine's biting tendency can be eliminated. Below, I'll explain a strategy that relies heavily upon startling a dog when he bites. I'll also describe the steps you need to take in the event your pooch sinks his teeth into someone.

Curbing The Tendency Through Startle Response

Dogs learn to bite as puppies. If you were to observe them playing with their littermates, you would notice them biting each other while playing. It is natural to them because their mouth is the primary tool they use to hunt. Unfortunately, if your canine's natural tendency to bite is not curbed, it will continue to grow and become a problem for you, your family, and guests.

Many trainers and veterinarians suggest using a "startle response" strategy to teach your pooch not to bite. When he does, make a sharp noise at a high pitch that startles him. If, as a puppy, he were to hurt one of his littermates by biting too hard, this is the noise they would make. When he hears it, he'll know instinctively that he has done something wrong. In some cases, you'll notice that he'll look confused. Take that opportunity to substitute a chew rope or another toy that he can bite. That teaches him that biting is acceptable as long as he doesn't do it to people.

You should also socialize your puppy as soon as possible so he'll learn at an early age what kind of behavior is appropriate around people. Spaying or neutering your dog can also reduce the likelihood of biting.

What To Do If Someone Is Bitten

If your canine bites someone, control him immediately. Then, ask the person who has been bitten whether he or she needs medical attention. Give that person all of your contact information as well as that of your veterinarian. Also, provide your pooch's last vaccination date.

If animal control workers arrive, answer their questions openly; they'll likely want as much information about your canine and the events surrounding the bite as possible. Finally, ask your vet to recommend a professional trainer to help curb the behavior as quickly as possible.

Your dog's biting tendency can be eliminated easily if you devote time toward it when he is still a puppy. Even as an adult dog, the tendency can be suppressed by enrolling him into professional obedience classes. The investment helps ensure the safety of your family and guests.

Holistic Cat Food: What Is Holistic Cat Food?

By Christine Pinkston

Holistic cat food means that the food is all natural and yes you should be using it.

The cat industries food producers are one of the biggest culprits in the early deaths of our lovable furry family members.

A normal cat only lives to about the age of nine but the natural life span for cats is around twenty eight years. One of the contributing factors for how long a cat lives is the nutrition of the food he eats. The majority of the commercial food is no better for your cat then feeding him Twinkies.

Fortunately for us we eat other things besides Twinkies or our life span might not be much better off then the average cats.

Anything holistic means that it is void of all artificial ingredients. The thing about cat food is that even if it says that it is holistic that does not automatically mean that it is good for your cat. The cat food companies have different laws they follow then food for human consumption does.

That means that if the meat (I'm using that term loosely) was brought to the plant with preservatives in it that they could still claim that it is preservative free. By law this is okay for them to do.

Another thing to think about is what kind of meat goes into your feline's food. Any thing that is not consumable by humans can be put into wet or dry food, from cancerous cow lungs to poisoned pound animals.

The poison that is used when they put down the dogs and cats does not cook out at the temperatures that the processing plant uses. That means that you may very well be slowly poisoning your cat.

So what should you do?

While there are some safe commercial foods, the best option for your cat would be to use some homemade food and some store bought food. This will give your cat the overall nutrition that he needs to live a healthy and long life.

Is All Natural Dog Food Healthy?

By Moses Wright

"All natural dog food" is a phrase commonly describing dog food that contains natural or organic ingredients. This phrase is widely used and may be misleading.

Commercial dog foods typically use artificial colors, artificial flavoring, and preservatives. Several small dog food manufacturers produce natural dog food that does not contain these artificial ingredients.

Dog food that is described in this way may still be unhealthy for dogs. For example, a dog food that is made entirely of corn and grain can be all natural but still be unhealthy for dogs.

Dog owners need to consider what ingredients are included in the dog food in addition to whether or not the ingredients are organic or natural. A dog diet should be largely based on protein from meat, though an all meat diet should be avoided.

A dog owner has several options for healthy, all natural dog food. A healthy dog food with quality ingredients can be a commercial dog food with organic ingredients and a good source of animal protein.

Many dog owners prefer to make all natural, homemade dog food. The homemade dog food can be healthy, cooked dog food recipes or a raw dog food diet. Making dog food is appealing to many dog owners because it gives them control over the type of ingredients and the quality of ingredients in the dog food.

Most of the dogs diet should come from protein from a natural animal source such as chicken or beef. Whether the dog owner decides to feed the dog commercial dog food or homemade dog food, the dog owner should ensure that the dog's diet is mostly protein. Few commercial dog foods contain mostly natural protein.

Some vegetables and grains for carbohydrates are often recommended as part of the dog's diet. A variety of foods in a dog's diet can help ensure that the dog the proper vitamins and minerals. Meat should still remain the main ingredient of the dog's diet.

If a dog owner decides to feed the dog homemade dog food, the dog owner should know which foods are toxic to dogs and should never be included in dog food. The dog owner should also be conscious of the fat content of the dog food since obesity can be problematic for dogs. A veterinarian should be consulted if the dog owner has questions about the dog's dietary needs.

Dog health is important first and foremost because you are your dog's primary guardian. A dog, like most pets, can be a loyal friend and companion, but they are really as vulnerable as a child. Dog health is often a cause of worry for every pet owner. Dog health questions are on the top of the mind for every dog lover and owner. Senior dog health often has more urgency than puppy health, but preventative medicine for any dog is critical to your dog's health and well being.

Exercise is a important part of your dog's health, however, where you live and the type of job you have can effect the amount of exercise that your dog can get. If you work eight hours a day, work down town or far away from work, or if you have a apartment where residences are built close together and you can barely find some grassy area, let alone walk your dog, he probably won't get a lot of exercise. Exercises depend on your dog's sex, age, and health level. A dog likes to jog, fetch, and race-walk a lot.

Exercise in a fenced in yard or at a local park is best. Offer your dog some good dog toys to play with during exercise time. Exercise will help the heart, lungs and muscles to assist in overall good health. By the way, those benefits help you, too.

We are all guilty of this at times. We feed the dog a scrap of food from the table. This is a bad habit so don't start! Dogs require good nutrition. He will think it is a game! Preventative medicine should be the norm. Get your dog vaccinated, proper dental care and watch for ticks and other parasites to ensure your dog's good health.

By Joma Kristen

You feel so helpless! But there are some great home remedies that can give your dog relief from his dog allergies.

Dog allergies are just as extensive as human allergies. They can come from food and from the external environment like dust and fleas. Dogs are also prone to seasonal allergies which will subside after a certain pollen fertilization season has passed. The symptoms are generally either sneezing or itching and skin irritation. This itching and scratching can go to such severe lengths that your dog can even begin to lose its fur.

To relieve your dog from these allergy outbreaks, the best thing you can do is give the pet a colloidal oatmeal bath in cool water. This helps the irritation of skin and relieves the itching.

If you find that your dog is licking and scratching at its paws then it is because these are normally itching even more excessively during an allergy outbreak. If this is the case consider giving your pet an Epsom salts bath. But watch closely until the bath is over just in case your dog tries to drink the water. Many times dog allergies are caused by such simple things as changing the material used for your dog bedding. Some dogs might be allergic to the kind of cloth you use. Try changing that to alleviate the allergy symptoms.

Food allergies are a major cause for dog allergies. Your dog may be allergic one of the ingredients in the food you are feeding to your pet. In this case it is a good idea to try eliminating one or two elements from the dog's food and see if that helps. You can also use dog foods that have hydrolyzed proteins - these are foods with the elements broken down into such small portions that they can not cause allergy. This way they can help your dog be healthy again. If using this kind of food works for your dog than it is a good idea to get your dog checked out for what food he is allergic to. You can refer to a vet to achieve that.

These tips will provide your dog relief and give you the pleasure of being with a happy animal. But is symptoms persist, you should head to the vet as soon as possible.

Dangerous Dog Food Equals Bad Health And Shortened Life Span

By Lisa Griffiths

Don't you consider your pets as part of the family and want to avoid giving her dangerous dog food? They are our friends and children. We wouldn't purposely feed tainted chow to our four-legged children.

We only want the best for our pet, right? But, we still buy our dog's food at the closest store when caring for our canine friends should include seeking all natural dog foods.

This could be costly in terms of our pet's health and longevity.

With new evidence being plastered in the media constantly about specific food source scares and bad ingredients found in widely know brand name dog foods, I am going to think twice about buying these widely advertised packages of dog food.

Maybe we should get a clue and be a little more diligent and research the foods we give our canine children. Choosing natural dog food over chain store brands and actually reading the ingredients list could provide our pets with access to a longer life.

When shopping for my two-legged family, I check the labels. If I can't even pronounce it or don't know what it is, I am not going to put it on the table. Watch the ingredient list on your pet's dog food label for the same things. If it makes you question at all what it is, don't put it in your dog's bowl.

In other words, if the ingredients on my baby's (dog baby, that is) food are something I would not eat then I'm not feeding it to her.

All natural dog foods seem the logical choice for our family of dogs and if we want to keep them as healthy as possible, it is up to their human parents to avoid the dangerous dog food.

We could actually help keep our dog around longer, even if for only a few months. However, with a bit of effort we might have them in our lives for years to come.
